I AM a retired Police Officer. I have been in a situation where the area I was covering wasn't controlled and it almost got someone killed. By ME. I was covering the front of a house that a shooting suspect had run into. I was one of two officers that arrived first. While I was covering, a car pulled up behind me with two of the suspects brothers in it. (They DID leave in a hurry when I turned to the street with my shotgun pointed at them.) But, I immediately called for the street to be blocked off.
If the subject in this video crossed a police line to video, there is no doubt he was interfering with an officer and should be arrested. Which is what appears happened. If his dog got loose and attempted to bite ANYONE the officers are sworn to protect the public. And believe it or not Officer's are also the public.

p.s. It's good to see people supporting an officer. Most of the time all we hear about is when an officer screws up. THANKS.

Just for the record, I usually support the decisions made by police. My father-in-law is a state trooper and I respect his job a great deal. He has said on occasion that there is absolutely no reason why any officer should need to kill a dog unless it's suffering or your life is in immediate danger. I don't really like big dogs! I don't particularly like people who have rots or pits as they usually don't have them for the right reasons. I especially don't like people who test the waters when it comes to law enforcement - if this guy was breaking a police barrier then he was obstructing. However, I saw no reason why an officer, especially a male officer, felt the need to shoot and kill the dog. It was not attacking anyone, it was simply defending it's owner.

In defending, it attacked. Maybe I need to watch again, but just before the shots, it looked like the dog lunged at the officer, which means it was attacking, or at least appeared to be.

how about pepper spray or a tazer? I mean a little spray and call animal control. guy was obviously a dumb ass and got his dog shot by being an antogonistic ass but I think it could have been avoided. I feel bad for the dog he was just trying to protect his guy. it didn't know what was going on.

First, can't tell if they tried pepper spray first, you can hear something and the dog crouches. Maybe they did use it? Second, doesn't look like they have tazers on them. If they did, would they even work on a dog? The prongs are designed for humans, not dogs.

I would think they would work, it's simple contact and electricity. I don't see why it wouldn't work. also I don't think the dog would have attacked. it just looked scared. it lunged once before the lung that got it shot and it cowered back. I don't know protocol but I would have recgonized that the dog was going to jump out of that car and asked the guy to secure the dog so we could talk to him. since they saw the dog as a potential threat(they shot it after all) I would think securing the dog hanging out of the window would have been priority one. since they had not arrested him at that point.

but I get why they shot it. when you're out there you can't take chances but I think it could have been handled better.

When I ask of it would work on a dog, I mean would those prongs pierce the skin an stick? What if the dog has a lot of hair like a poodle. They may be taught to not even consider that an option with dogs. Their skin may be tougher, too much hair in the way, or any other factors.

Plus, like I said, I don't think they had a taser on them anyway.

That dog's owner got him killed. He never should have been where he was, and was interfering with the police. My dog would have done the same thing if he saw me being put into cuffs, it's the fault of the stupid owner for not securing him. Can't blame the police for not wanting to be a chew toy. About the only thing I can fault the police for is that if either of them had a dog, they should have realized the dog would jump out of the car, and told the man to go roll up the windows and secure the dog first and then arrest him.

I've seen videos where OC spray doesn't work on humans, I wouldn't trust it on a hunch with a dog that is trying to attack me.
