Apparently I literally drove the wheel off my car.

And yes the lugs were torqued correctly. The upside is that with some minor repair and steel lug nuts I was back out on the track for a mild session before the day was over. My wife and I were also able to race my car the next day in the autocross without issue.

Did you notice any aluminum "rings" being left behind when you removed them before?

I've got cheap lugs on my car and never really worried about it. Maybe it's time for new ones...

I never had an issue with threads being left behind before. And I pulled the wheels to do some pre-NG stuff which is why I know they were torqued.

Thanks for the link. I will probabaly grab some ARP extended studs and look at a good set of STEEL open ended lug nuts. At this point too many threads is preferred to too few.

So where is that video of the wheel coming off? Who was behind you?

Scott Johnson was behind me and he had his GoPro on. The camera was on the driver's side so you don't see the whole thing but you do see the wheel come off, the car drop down and slide, and then if you look close you can see the tire off in the distance a few frames later. Luckily Pete was clear of the corner long before the tire made it there.

Sorry to hear about this, Levi, but glad no one was damaged.

Sorry also to have missed the event and the chance to meet you and your croo.

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

Also for forgetting to ask how it felt, coming off?

Did it wag at all first, or just let go?

I have no experience with aluminum lug-nuts...
