    Twin Turbo Question

I know it may not be practical but can someone put a smaller turbo on one bank and bigger on the other bank? Small turbo for lower rpms and bigger for higher rpms? Am I being silly in thinking this or is it possible?

Well, it's not a great idea being that they're on separate banks. There is a system like this called a sequential twin turbo. It's what they use on the R34 GT-R and the 2JZ Supra. It's easy since they're inline engines. You can do it the same way with a V engine. I, personally, wouldn't run one bank on a smaller turbo and the other on a bigger turbo. Also, just and FYI, it seems most people ditch those systems for a single turbo setup.

I know diesel guys do it and it's more commonly talked about with them. I haven't heard of any 3S running the staggered set up

I know that some people will upgrade the front turbo because its easier and leave the back.

Diesel guys don't normally run it on separate banks, they run them sequentially. That is, through one and then through the other, not in parallel.

It would seem like there would be a chance of compressor surge doing this.

I understand that they use one to spool the other but it just seemed like with the small turbo you lose top end horsepower and with big turbos you lose to lag on the bottom end. Anyone run sequential turbos on a 3S and have it run well?

I've seen it done on a DSM and Supra. They've worked pretty well. It's more difficult on our engines due to the V formation.

EDIT: Sorry getting this mixed with compound turbo setups. I've seen compounds on DSMs and Supras, Supras come stock with sequential.
