Aww that sucks!
Transmission is the next thing getting rebuilt once this engine is back up and running correctly.

So what we assumed was a bent valve on my new engine, turned out to be rust on the valves themselves causing them to stick and the rockers to fall off. I don't know how rust got in there as I coated the valves in motor oil when I built the heads. So I'm going to clean all the valve and valve guides and get this engine back together.... Eventually!!
Great news![]()

So got the head off on Saturday. Found that all of the valves where the rockers fell off had rust on them. Only the one was bad enough to cause it to stick really bad. Looked at the valves and pistons and looks like there was no contact so they should all be good. I'm waiting on a Keeper install tool which should be here tomorrow. I'm using a home made tool which is great for dis-assembly but a pain trying to get the keepers back in. So I should be able to finish the head off tomorrow and work on getting it back together this week.

So again, I have been busy and not keeping this thread updated.
So I got the new tool to find out it is good for taking keepers off but not putting them back together. I ahve anotehr thread somewhere about it. basically it tells you to use a hammer to set the keepers, well.... I broke a valve doing it that way!!!
so I'll never use that tool again to install them. Swapped in a new valve and got the head re-installed.
Car was still running a little rough so figured it was base timing. tried to set it and the notch was way over past the marks and I could not get it to lower any further. Took off the cam pulley and realized when I make the mark for it on the 3sx aluminum pulley, I did it wrong...LMAO!! So earlier I posted a pic on how I made the mark:
Well face to face like that causes it to be off by like 30 degrees. Corrected the timing mark issue and got it all back together.
Now the engine was running rough again and smoking. Pulled plugs and two plugs were coated in oil. Figured I had an oil leak from head gasket or rings. Did a leak down test and they all were 3-5% leak down. so they were all in great condition. Pulled the valve covers again and found a rocker on the read head slipped to an angle which caused the intake valve to not close all the way. got the rocker fixed and the engine back together and now she idles nice and smooth... but still smoking. When I hit the throttle is smokes really really bad... at this point i am hoping the smoking is due to me not breaking in the rings yet.
I have a small coolant leak to fix, Find some exhaust leaks and get a new Alt-A/C Adjust pulley as mine is squealing bad, then I will get her on the road to break the engine in.

Glad to hear you're getting back on track with this thing.
And yeah, give her hell to break it in![]()
Yea, i dont know when/where the hammer strategy came from...
...but its definitely not the suggested method![]()
if you cant fix it with a hammer...then you have an electrical problem
So Have I told you about my experience with excessive smoking on first start up?![]()
Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!
