    Not a happy camper....

So Thursday I bought used replacement motor for my F250 from a local salvage yard... They told me I would have to swap intake manifolds due to a year model difference, but otherwise it was a direct replacement.

Well, I looked it over when I got it, and yep, the intake was different, and well as the left exhaust manifold and the engine harness. No big deal, I can swap all that stuff out...

So I go in this morning, drive the truck in the shop, and proceed to rip and tear....

So at this point, I start tearing all the to be swapped parts off each motor, and end up here...

This would be when I notice the major problem...

Obviously, the rectangular port manifold isn't going to bolt onto the round port motor...

So now, I get to put the cab back on the truck, get it back on it's wheels, stash all the parts in it somewhere, and roll it out of the shop before work Monday morning... Until this morning, it would run and drive under it's own power. Now I'm going to have a 4X4 long bed, extra cab, Superduty behemoth stuck in the middle of my parking lot for who knows how long... (and screw up another weekend when I do find a replacement motor....)

    Yay....

It's a V10... The truck is an 01, it would appear that the replacement engine is a 99.

I didn't realize they changed the heads on them or I would have been a little more inquisitive... I figured the interchange had it covered and it would work.

I'll find out Monday, but I'm currently operating under the assumption that the salvage yard will prefer to find me the correct motor rather than give me my money back...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I think what they would PROBABLY prefer is that you swap heads as well as intakes. See, we told you it would interchange with just a few minor component switch overs.

It still sucks, even if they find you the right engine for no additional charge. You still have ALL the aggravation and annoyance from THEIR mistake.

Hmm..Not super familiar with the V10, I assume it's another modular 2v Windsor like the 5.4 and the 4.6 though and if so then the following should all apply:

Could potentially be a non-PI motor (or a PI motor if yours was non-PI)? PI would have been a combo of black plastic and aluminum with rather short runners, the non PIs were (I believe) all aluminum with very long runners. The ports for the intake manifold to the head were square on the 4.6l PI and round on the non-PI, I assume that this is much the same. So you would seemingly have the different years on hand, which would require doing a head swap but the shortblock would be the same. You should be able to run either, just with a difference in TQ and HP. Obviously the non-PI was down on TQ and HP.

How different is the intake manifold in terms of height? You CAN use the PI manifold on Non PI heads provided you use the PI gasket and RTV around the slightly mismatched water jacket holes. Looks to be significantly closer on the 6.8 than it was on my 4.6.

I would probably still pull the front timing chain cover off and inspect behind it, make sure that the guides haven't been worn yet. Easier to replace any of the timing chain components now than after it's installed.

Obviously it's a difference between a PI and non-PI... The ports ARE the primary difference between the two. Being as the V10 began production in 99, they switched to PI in 99 for the 5.4, and me not being really familiar with the V10, I was unaware of the existence of a non-PI V10... Guess I know better now. After doing some checking last night, it appears that the 99-00 were non-PI, 01-up were PI. It seem ridiculous that the interchange didn't catch that little detail...

As far as swapping parts around, there's no way in hell I'm putting a non PI motor in my truck...

Well, in that case harass the place to get the appropriate motor, or make them at least comp you enough to get the top end gaskets to swap the heads and intake over.

If it makes you feel any better, it's not a Dodge. You would be replacing everything but the engine...
