.45acp with 230 grain hollowpoints is a good home protection weapon. Or a 12ga remington home defender, with a full stock or folding stock, pistol grips make for a worthless gun.

Oh and as for a rifle, get a 22lr, 45 long colt or 243. I shoot a Browning, Ruger also makes very dependable rifles.
I wouldnt go any larger if youre not planning on serious hunting, the price of a single round for my .300 winmag is stupid and would take the fun out of target practice.
i'd bet his left testicle that those weren't 7 rounds of hollowpoint. i'm also guessing whoever did it was probably using the "spray and pray" method.

i completely agree that larger caliber has more stopping power. that said, nobody uses one of these for personal protection:

i've seen both recommendations for .45's and stuff like a walther ppk (which wasn't available > 9mm until recently). can't have it both ways. i call 9mm as the middle ground.

70% to 90% of people will probably do this in the event of a home invasion.
Thats why I bought my wife a shotgun.

the best gun is the one you have put 1000+ rounds through and are most confortable with.

    shot placement > calibur.

Fortunately, you don't have to choose either proficiency or knockdown, you can have both. Having shredded a lot of ballistic gelatin, I personally consider .40 S&W absolute minimum for defensive use. Some disagree.

Seek professional instruction, then practice, practice, practice. Nothing replaces proficiency or familiarity with the firearm. Avoid spray and pray. 20 rounds in the mag will not make you a better shot. If two rounds to the center of the torso won't stop an assailant, you're using the wrong weapon. If you're shooting at anything else, you're more likely to miss.

Have a plan of defense already worked out. For you, I'd make that plan to hole up in a defensible spot and make the intruder come to you, such as a bedroom. Call the law, duck behind the bed and shoot anything not a police officer which tries to enter the room. Pillows are remarkably good at slowing bullets.

If you absolutely have to move through a house where you think an intruder is present, leave no room or closet behind you that you don't know is empty, and keep the firearm pointed where you are looking at all times. Avoid looking for bad guys until such a time as you learn to do it properly, if ever. Bear in mind that anyone who would break and enter your home is LIKELY to have a friend with him...

A typical 12ga 2-3/4, 00buck has 9 pellets of roughly 9mm. Great for knockdown. But you need to know your patterning at different distances. If you engage a target at 7 yards compared to 15 yards, your pattern can open up a fair amount and some pellets can miss the target. So chokes are a handy thing to play with, and knowing your distances. In some instances the design of the house you can get 15 yards. Just food for thought. I have one too, but I keep my pistols out more often.

Nah, man. I heard some story from some guy's friend who heard that someone didn't die after being shot with a 9mm. Who needs shot placement when you have a 45ACP? That actually could be the motto for way too many people. The only thing 45 does is provide a false sense of security for bad shot placement. *facepalm*

No argument from me, but if I can hit it with a 9mm, I can certainly hit it with my 10.

I know gelatin blocks that barely noticed 9mm, from glasers to silvertips. Of all the rounds we've tried, only glasers performed even marginally. I believe my gelatin blocks.

The only person in this thread that's suggested that is you. I could just as easily point out that having 20 not particularly effective rounds in your clip could have the same effect.

I recall a case recently where 2 law enforcement officers with 9mm's shot 9 bystanders while shooting at a single perp. Both emptied their weapons. Having itty bitty guns didn't help their shot placement a bit. And it's a damned good thing there weren't 2 perps.

The only good thing came out of it is that none of the bystanders died, but that doesn't exactly say much for the ammo.

So I'll maintain my position. Use the largest caliber you are COMFORTABLE with. If that happens to be 9mm, go with it.

Gelatin blocks, clips, and a story you heard.

That and 9mm is way more common than 45 auto so there are bound to be more stories of it than anything else. In this case, mostly stories of poor shooting. Shocking the greatest military force this world has ever seen uses the same round. And I am not partial to 9mm. I have a Hk USP .40 and Raging Bull .44 Magnum I lug around too. .45 auto isn't a bad round, but you can take down more perps with the same size mag of 9mm than you can 45 assuming you can shoot well. And as we all know, criminals have a tendency to work in groups. At the core of it all, it is what you shoot best with.
