Question 6 speed Synchro trouble , Replace the full set or just the Center Friction Ring

    I got bad 1st 2nd and 3rd gear Synchro.
Has anyone experience in just replacing the Center Friction Ring for each gear , and use the old inner and outer ring ??
Was told that the the center friction ring is what wears out.

The full set is alot of $$$

    whats your opinion on this?

Though I bought a set for 1st, and second, I should of only replaced the friction rings. The rest rarely wear out.

Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!

If there are any signs of heat, scoring, or deposits on the outer and inner I'd replace them. If not then they are probably ok, but assembly the syncros against the gear and be sure there is a gap between the outer syncro and the gear.

Also you can try to push the syncro against the gear and turn the gear, with a new syncro you shouldn't be able to turn the gear.

worst case and it just has to come out again. The gear dog teeth and slider teeth are more important IMHO.

Here's some examples from a few gearboxes I've gone thru...

The synchro on the bottom is toast... The one in the center is a new Transtar USA repair grade. The upper is a new JDM Getrag.

The two on the left are trashed 1st/2nd friction rings. One on the right is JDM New.

These are from another gearbox... They are all bad. You can see the heat and scoring on the inners and outers of the 1/2's.

    Good ones look like this.

You'll be just fine with used ones if they aren't burnished or scored as mentioned earlier. I thought the visual examples would be helpful. Good luck man!
