Most of the freeways in MI are 70. 90% of the drivers here do 80![]()
I think the reason most states haven't raised the speed limit closer to 100, despite the fact most cars can do it easily now, is they know if they raise it, people will continue to exceed it by 10-20mph.
A local road near me was turned from a kinda small rural 2 lane road into a 4 lane highway and speed limit went from 35 to 55. Before people did 50-55 on it. Now they do 65+ all the time.
Oddly they raised the speed limit from 45 on a local road that people did 60 on. The speed limit is now 55 and people still go anywhere from 45 to 60. People drive at a speed that they're comfortable at, no matter what the speed limit is.
Even sillier are places that try to enforce speeds like 15mph and below. Yes, I can totally target 7 mph with my speedometer that starts at 10![]()

True enough, but depends on the road as well. I was referring more to the interstate system and local 4 lane highway kind of deal as opposed to 2 lane roads.
Although, in short: Blame one dirtbag in Montana for fighting his ticket that we don't have unlimited speed limits :P
Mods: 2g 3k body conversion, 2g Brake upgrade, Rota P45R rims
Projects: Interior sound deadening, 14Bs, forged bottom end, custom radiator and sound mounts
Unlimited speed roads would lead to disaster for exactly the reason I stated. People will go at the speed they feel comfortable going. You'll end up with some slowpoke going 55-60 with people blowing by at 90mph.
Autobahn has no speed limit, but there is a minimum speed and Germans are waaaaaaay better drivers.
Germany has a far more difficult and expensive driver licensing program. Over here instead of instituting a system to teach better driving techniques we just develop laws that limit driving conditions for young/new drivers and expect seat time to make them capable. Unfortunately many of the parents instructing the new drivers are not so good at driving themselves.
