I think it's a pretty good system to be honest...6 warnings is pretty lenient.

Well I do agree with that in general, with Netflix,Hulu and Amazon TV is pretty cheap.

From what it says, its only "hosters" aka detects uploads(which means you are dolling out the file. They are not feeding you a fake file and waiting for you to take the bait and its only bittorrent. But other download methods and proxy services just got a lot more popular.

Games are so cheap after a few months also.

bittorrent has been disappointing of late. quite honestly, FF+youtubemp3podcaster=musichappiness. and yes, many games are cheap & not really worth cracking...but i can understand why someone would pirate a game like wings of liberty, since it's still a $60 game. sure, that means single-player only, but not a big deal for some.

what irritates me is that congress has not stepped in to prevent the used-media market from being wiped out. say what you want about cartridge-based media, but BITD, it was way more "crack-proof" than CD's.

    p.s.

i don't get the point of this CAS. when companies go after pirates/file-sharers, the people they catch are usually the noobs and amateurs. using VPN outside a country, using Tor, etc...the smart people are all using stuff like this. stupidity is what will get people caught.

it's kinda like that idiot who outsourced his work to china, but didn't have them access the company servers from a US ip address. of course that got the whole affair red-flagged & traced. simple, simple stuff. it's like having sex without protection, or surfing the web without anti-virus. getting caught--as of right now--certainly seems to be more about how intelligent the perpetrator is, than it is about equitable policing.

...not that i'm condoning anything illegal.

I think the people who do it correctly and hide their tracks are in the majority over the people that just jump on it quick and pull something down. If they cut down on those people then they're making a dent with a relatively easy to use system. To spend the time to catch the real people is what takes time and I'm sure the record labels are looking into ways to do that.

I see this as a way for providers to show they're at least doing something to cut down on it.

if they want to cut down on piracy, the RIAA/MPAA needs to OPENLY EMBRACE all-digital formats. this includes single-point outlets for media (ala netflix). currently, finding movies on netflix is a laughable task. the MPAA could be ponying-up and working WITH the system, rather than fighting against the advent of progress. the RIAA at least learned from napster and got behind iTunes (not that i condone iTunes).

if you fight progress, you will lose. every time.

2 big reasons ISPs are going along with it: So that RIAA and MPAA can't sue them for allowing such activity, but also as importantly to reduce bandwidth usage. Numerous ISPs have started putting caps on people's internet to "ensure fair access" for everyone. This of course will be a problem as more and more media moves to online formats. I myself am limited to either Verizon 3g (5gb a month for 50 bucks), Satellite internet (like 100 bucks for high latency and about 15gb a month) or dial up. So all these data things moving online is a pain in the ass for me, and I can tell you it's hard as hell to stay under these data caps. Think about how much data is used up streaming a 5 minute youtube video. Even with flash disabled and just browsing Facebook, 3si, 3sgto and doing homework online I generally end up at 8 or 9gb a month.

it's a goddamn lie that they are trying to "ensure fair access". what they are really saying is "we spent all the $$$ from our consumers on hookers and blow for our CEO's, and we forgot to buy any infrastructure."

Not that they forgot to buy any infrastructure, more like "We advertised the fuck out of the service but havent added any new infrastructure since Y2K so now our service is slow and overloaded."

That'll be nice about goin back to UTK this summer: Some of the fastest net speeds in the nation.
