I just found his decision to leave WV curious. Admittedly they just lost to Pitt in the backyard brawl when they were #1 or #2 in the country, but he left and went to Michigan, taking over a team that was in no way, shape or form ready to run a spread offense and a 3-3-5 defense. Something to keep in mind with Michigan at this point is that they are still Rodriguez's players as Hoke starts to get his own recruits in. This is the infuriating thing about college football of late. they pull in coaches who have totally different systems, then give them 3 years to turn it all around because Saban did it that quick.
Mods: 2g 3k body conversion, 2g Brake upgrade, Rota P45R rims
Projects: Interior sound deadening, 14Bs, forged bottom end, custom radiator and sound mounts
Nothing curious about it. It was about money, as is every facet of college football. The 3-3-5 had no chance in Michigan without Jeff Casteel. He's the only person in the country competent to execute that defense to perfection. Which is why he has never stopped trying to get him on board. Finally succeeded last year. Was sad to see him go, but if he wants to keep that kind of company, then good riddance I say. I mean, Casteel and the other assistants who went to Zona all took pay cuts...now that is curious.

like our Rural Domestic young male said, "it's all about da Benjamins baby".
a new coach coming in and winning with the previous coaches players that didn't do so well isn't unusual. look at Paul Johnson at GT. dude got worked last year and can't recruit for squat. but he kicked some ass with Chan's players in a completely different system. Hell Richt's best years were with Ray Goff's players and talent wise they can't compare to today's players. Lame Kiffen in UT. the list goes on.
Perhaps, but he made 500k more at Michigan than he did at WVU, money that he gave back to the university as part of the buy out. So really he was making the same at Michigan as he did at WVU. I like the idea of a 3-3-5 defense though (it's my defense of choice in NCAAfootball anyhow), especially in the age of spread football. And what he did with White and Slaton was impressive. Really, it's just sad that he is such a narcissist. Separate the coach (and of course the staff) from the man, and you've got a guy with a fantastic chance to be one of the great ones. He never did seem comfortable at Michigan though, and yes without Casteel it wasn't the same defense.
Head coaches, like quarterbacks, get too much credit for winning and too much blame for losing. As an example for my team of choice (Tennessee), look at what happened to Fulmer when Cutcliffe (Offensive coordinator) at the end of the 07 season to coach Duke. It happened to coincide with the SEC really stepping up and in essence, cost Fulmer his job. Chavis loses his job and signs with LSU, giving LSU one of the most dominant defenses in the country since then. Cutcliffe gets Duke to finish near .500 yearly. Fulmer is effectively ostracized by the university for 2 bad seasons in 15 years. They hire Kiffin who fields a quasi-successful team who then bolts to USC (don't blame him for it though), then hire Dooley who is the antithesis of Kiffin. Dooley manages to be absolutely awful at recruiting and his assistants are of questionable quality. UT goes from 3 losing seasons in 20 years, to 3 straight years of losing seasons. LSU vies with Bama yearly for SEC West domination, Duke at least has a shot at bowl games and went bowling for the first time in almost 20 years, UT becomes a basement dweller in the SEC. Pretty much all with 1 assistant coach change. Remarkable.
Of course, assistants leaving to go to Zona with pay cuts is a bit curious, but perhaps they think if they get back with Rich Rod that they will be going back to BCS games?
He was getting 1.75 mil at WVU, and that was after contract extension and negotiation when he turned down the Bama job. And a week or so later he was gone, so he only made that for a second. He made 2.5 mil at UofM. It was a pretty substantial jump in moolah.
You think he left WVU thinking he would have to pay them 1.5 mil? The only reason it was 1.5 was because UofM paid the other 2.5 for him. His intent was always that the buyout would not stand because he though he could argue that the university didn't support his program adequately. The fact is he fucked up. Big time. He was THE celebrity in the state of WV. He could have retired from WVU and went down in the history books as a hero among men. Well, he will still go down in the history books, but for an entirely different reason. Seriously, he's not welcome in the State of WV.
Not to mention his real estate scams, cheerleader indiscretion(s), etc. Dude's a weasel. One of his best buddies, Tony Gibson, is now back at WVU and stole multiple high profile commits from Zona and flipped them to WVU. Very happy to have Tony back with the good guys.
In any event, I'm tired of talking about him, as are most West Virginians. We simply don't care what he does. Not worth our time, and when it all shook out we ended up much better off in the long run by getting Dana.

Texas A&M Aggies QB Johnny Manziel signed at two more sessions - sources - ESPN
Manziel is going down in flames.

This whole thing is absurd. A&M will play him for every second that they can, right up until NCAA rules him ineligible. Then he'll sit out the rest of the year and go into the draft. Makes no difference at the end of the day, but between this and the Jerseys on the website and electing not to renew any licensing with any video games, has me thinking that the NCAA expects to lose their lawsuit with players.
And by by-laws they mean their revenue machine. The NCAA is investigating whether any of the autographs violate NCAA by-laws.
