Pretty much... And the thermostat housing is under the timing belt, so it has to come off... We decided to do a water pump while we were there, it was starting to grow a chia pet around the weephole.

Valve cover gaskets were leaking as well.... Car has 60K on it.

Haha, the newer VW's can be a massive PITA. On my New Beetle, everything was hell to get to. Changing the battery? Changing a headlight? Alternator? Better block off a weekend, lol. No complaints about longevity though, I beat the piss out of that car and it was still going at 260k+ miles, original clutch, 1st and only plug/wire/timing belt change at 160k. Never changed the oil, just ran it dry and added more to it every year or so, LOL.

You got very lucky... You should play the lottery.

Can't count the water pump impellers that have fallen off at less than 100K... Many as soon as 50-60K. Completely sludged engines with plugged oil pick-ups from poor maintenance, numerous codes stemming from rotted vacuum lines on a 5 year old car, oil leaks, and just about every one I see has a coolant leaking out of the plastic water outlet...

That's pretty much word for word what VW told me when I took it in at 160k. Actually, they even argued with me that there is no way the car had never been serviced. It was a good one, I miss that car. Wish I would've taken better care of it.
