I saw this a lot in Waco while at Baylor. I had a handful of black friends at Baylor, when we would go out they would be heckled because they were "acting white".

How the hell is going to college and making a life for yourself "acting white". So stupid.

Were the hecklers locals (it is waco after all) or students?

we have "american" culture. all of us, collectively. even if you were born and raised in a foreign land, if you are living in the USA permanently, then drop the pretense; you are officially an american now. what made america great was the melting pot of culture. trying to preserve "black culture" is in essence spitting in the eye of what makes this country so great. if the chinese, irish, germans, etc--never assimilated, this country would be as fractionated as the former republic of yugoslavia.

appreciate who you are and where you come from, and remain mindful that ethnicity has no bearing on your abilities as a human being. not in america. conceptions of personal limitations are what holds someone back, not "the man". maybe this is easier to see for someone like me, who is as dis-connected from his birth-family as he is from popular culture--but i stand by this assertion: when you perceive yourself as an independant, autonomous entity--unsaddled by concerns over "group membership"--it is then you can be truly free. it is then when you are yourself alone, and not of the mold of any grouping or stereotype that some may wish to place upon you.

    god bless america.
I love it how people tell me that there is no "black/hispanic/(insert brown group here)" culture..but ask them what they are and their first response is Irish/Italian/Dutch. The American bit is understood, yet the only people that get shit about stating it are not white.

You act like I'm claiming a fucking country in Africa somewhere, I'm not...I can't...my family doesn't know where we came from nor would we be viewed as kin if we went back. We ARE American. To pretend as if there are not subcultures within American culture is complete bullshit, and honestly this is why I don't get involved in conversations like this. There IS black culture in the US, just as there is mountain folk culture, just as there is city culture or suburban culture.

Anyone that actually knows me will tell you that I don't subscribe to pretending as if I'm a "member" of some sort of national black movement. But just because I personally don't subscribe to racial groupings or stereotypes in a traditional manner does NOT mean that others don't put their stereotypes or beliefs on me. Which is pretty much the reason for this thread in the first fucking place. RGIII may not give a rat's ass about the "movement" that some folks think exists, but that doesn't stop them from having opinions on him. Just because you don't believe in evil, doesn't mean it doesn't believe in you.

I hate bigotry and I don't subscribe to it, but that doesn't stop others from being bigots toward me one bit...come the fuck on. Only a complete fool or someone that has never truly experienced it believes that racism and bigotry will go away when you stop thinking a certain way. It is tribalism at its core and we're built to see the differences in each other. What makes us human is not giving a shit about those differences.

Unsubscribed, because this thread has officially pissed me the fuck off.

wow, mike. there was NOTHING in my response that was directed at you personally. my context was a general sense. and i DO believe that dispensing with tribalism will help to curtail racism.

for what it's worth, i never hear someone being accused of not being "mountain" enough, or "southern" enough, or "surban" enough. sure, there are sub-sets of culture that appear--it's bound to happen in a country of 300 million people. the difference is whether or not someone gets publicly chastised because he/she is or is not part of said sub-group. the fact that a BLACK man is doing it to another BLACK man says that there's something seriously wrong in black sub-culture.

if you don't like someone, don't associate with them. but whatever you do, don't rail on them just because they don't fit YOUR mold of how you think they should be (and this has nothing to do with racism whatsoever). the only "racist" part about this is the fact someone is throwing "race" into the criteria of how behavior should be. FOUL.

    Kinda confused, Mike.

I've gone several rounds with you on this point, mostly in the other place, and I believe you when you say you don't hold the sticky racial attitudes of those who purport to be the exemplars of the entire black population in America, but rather than point those people up as flies in the ointment, you - correct me if I'm wrong - seem to be more than willing to accord them a well-earned space.

If I say people like Jesse and Al are huge impediments to any way forward vis a vis curing what ails us racially, tell me how I am wrong?

If I say their spiels combined with the white guilt they foment constitute the sum of the problem, tell me how I am wrong?

If I say RGIII is a step-or-two away from evincing a stereotypically 'black' point-of-view, and suggest he might be termed 'post-racial', tell me how I am wrong?

This is just fucking stupid. Why can't people just be who they are? It's like me arguing with people about racism. I've been called racist so many times it's fucking stupid, and I'm not the least bit racist. I hate as many black, yellow, purple, orange people as I do white people. I know plenty of people that I get along with perfectly well of all colors and creeds.

This "filing" of people into categories and cliques does nothing more than create artificial barriers that ignorant people continue to uphold for no good reason at all.

I think I agree, though I don't think categorizing those who categorize (Al and Jesse, in this instance) is what you're talking about.

    Or is it?
