I find it curious that the Mitsu OEM belts do fit tightly around the large sprocket. Does this say the OEM belt has a different tolerance or behaves differently under tension than the Gates belt?
Well it sounds like Aaron solved the mystery however both the standard and racing belt I have in stock fits around the pulley without issue. It was a bit tough to get it to seat towards the end but when putting a bit of pressure on it I was able to get it to look like the one Hans posted.
Between that and what Aaron said I'm pretty confident in these belts still, I wouldn't hesitate to put either on my car.
Pic of the racing belt for comparison.

I have the regular gates belt and Race belt here used and new and both fit fine. I was able to duplicate the original posters pic by not seating it just right or not wrapping it around hard enough. But in the end, they all fit perfect.

Hmmmm... I think further response from Aaron is needed.
While I understand the statement about the belts being tested under tension, I thought they didnt stretch or the amount of stretch would be minimal. Seeing the pics from Eric, I would also assume the pitch of the belt is wrong. Running it would damage the sides of the teeth on both components.
I spent a number of years in a rubber research lab so i am familiar with construction and testing. I'd like to know more about how Gates does it.

Huh. And Aaron's the one with the Trojan avatar. Go figure...I spent a number of years in a rubber research lab![]()
