With regards to the part at the end, prison is the easiest way to force a mentality ill person like that to take treatment. Otherwise they have the right to deny it. I don't think there can be another solution without taking away rights. I could be wrong.

Heading defective humans off at the pass is a loser; civil rights and privacy would be the issues for debate, and I don't see an easy way around either.

Schools could be turned into fortresses, but the resemblance to a prison would be too off-putting.

Armed and visible security would come closest to passing muster, but again - objectionable and off-putting.

The video-game/violence argument is weak, because the seed has to be there to begin with - a kid without that specific kink isn't going to kill, and while an FSP gamer WITH the kink might learn rudimentary tactics, he/she wouldn't likely be detected because of the civil rights/privacy aspects.

    It's a poser.

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

You need to prove someone is a threat to themselves or others to commit them to inpatient treatment against their will. But that's usually not the hard part. The placement system and availibility of quality care is seriously fubar'd.

Prison does not treat mental illness. The routine can be helpful to some, but once a person is out they quickly regress.

Treating kids before they become defective adults is a winner.

It's also the only longterm, non-band-aid solution to stop these senseless acts of violence.

Agreed. But a step in the right direction. Civilians that have stopped mass shootings have a far less death toll than police that have stopped mass shootings...for obvious reasons.

Once in prison, they can send them to a mental health hospital. I know someone first hand hand going through this.

Agreed, if such cases present themselves clearly, but you would never get through the civil rights minefield of a public eager to point fingers and say, 'There's a weirdo, check him out'.
