Thread: Exedy or Sachs Clutch?

    Exedy or Sachs Clutch?

I will need to replace the clutch and flywheel on my 98 3000GT SL. It currently looks as though my options are a OEM Exedy clutch or a Sachs clutch (The Sachs clutch comes in organic, ceramic, kevlar, OEM or heavy duty). The question is, which would you choose? For the record, I am a smooth shifter, but an agressive driver. If you can support your decision with a reason, it would help me better understand what choice I will make.

    Exedy is a good choice.

This would be the Exedy Clutch I would be getting.
EXEDY 05048 OEM Replacement Clutch Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive

I am willing to spend $250ish on a better clutch if there is suggestions. I don't know how the shop is estimating $940 to do all the work with parts included. The car will be my DD, but I would like something that can handle a little extreme driving here and there. Maybe something like this?

Most people recommend Exedy. Supposedly it's the closest OEM replacement clutch you can find.

I ended up going with Sachs on my last clutch replacement job, only because Exedy had about a 2-3 week lead-time and because Sachs was offering a lifetime warranty. So far I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm running an Exedy heavy duty [full face organic]. Cannot fault it. Have done many many kms in it and daily drove it for quite a while. Heavy pedal so not great for stop start traffic but otherwise it's great.

Sachs is the OEM clutch for the 911 Turbo, GT2, and NA models since the 993 series, and probably before that. They know a thing or two about putting the power to the ground on high horsepower racing applications while still maintaining excellent streetability. Bottom line, you won't be sorry if you choose a Sachs clutch. Exedy will get the job done, but quality is a bit better on Sachs IMO.

If interested in the 05800, I can beat that price for you.
