    N\A Intake Disect.

So I was bored and started pulling apart my intake from my other motor.

    found this.

I was shocked because i was not expecting it. I assume its the same thing pretty much as the Cyclone intakes, except computer operated and not Vacuum\Boost operated.

the Valves open up at X Rpms for increased air flow for extra hp, and stay closed to conserve gas? could these potentially be tuned? like change the RPM they open at?

Thats the VIC's. It directs air thru the short runners below 3000, and above 3000 rpm opens and directs air thru the long runners. I may have that backwards.

Either way, you need it. I dont think "tuning it" would help. If you try to do away with it, you will lose power.

No, only the NA DOHC's. TT's dont need it. You will lose power on a DOHC NA without it

This type of indution works great for our NAs. It was developed and bult by Mikuni. Good stuff there. The longer route and narrow runners will speed up air flow to enhance low RPM responce. Than begin opening around 3000 depending on engine load. If no load at all, they will open around 5000 RPM and this is someting you can check and should check. It's all in the service/repair manual. How to check, what to check, and when to check. Most of those that I find are not working is because they never get the exersize they need and become stuck. I have had customers that shift before the bodies ever, ever open. Driving like this will load the cylinders as well. 2nd and 3rd gear pulls are a good way to exersize them. Good engine load there. This will help keep them operational and help keep the crap blown out. I also know that most will assemble these incorrectlly. So follw instruction when putting it back together. You should also note that each of the runners have air horns or Velocity stacks at the beginning of each runner. This too is by design. Mikuni missed nothing when they put this system togther. Hats off to Mitsubishi for going with the best.

tt's don't have that because the turbos shove air in there as fast as it will go regardless.

this could explain why my car chokes at around 3.5k under a load (usually when the motor is still warming up, like first start of the day). this may not be functioning properly...hmm i shall inspect!

Full opperational explenations and testing of the system are all explained in detail in the service/repair manual, as well as assembly and set up instructions.
There are applications were you can go with out. The VR4s don"t need this system as they have longer runners for the low end torque. And don't need the shorter fat runners as tey have the turbos to make up for the restrictions long runners create at higher engine rpms. That being said, both VR4 and NA have good drivability at low RPM/no boost appications. For more air volume requirments, the NA's have short large runner that open up and the VR4s have turbos.
    Blackmount,
Under "no load" applications, the induction bodies will not start opening untill around 5000 RPM. But under a full load they should begin opening around 3000 or so and fully open by 3500.
    Hope this helps.
Below, you will see VR4 runners on an NA application. We make up the the short coming of the longer VR4 runners by using a 2 liter plenum and "a bunch" of other goodies. One of them being true ram air.

During race application, the air filter is removed and the intake plumed dirrectly to the hood scoop Via 4 in. dia. piping.
