Importing a 3S and making it street legal, any knowledge?

    Guys,

As things are speeding up for me and my fiance, im comfortable posting this on the internetz. Were getting married, hopefully this summer if Dept of Homeland Security speeds up a bit and approves our application.
Since she lives in Louisiana, it'd be nice to close the gap between us, im flying back and forth every month between my job and being with her, pretty costly, not to mention the phone bills.

So, the question is, along with all my other crap that has to be shipped, the 3000GT has to come too and how will i be able to legally drive it?

Currently its not running and it wont be running when i get it here, due to lack of funds. I will have a green card (permanent residency) by then.

So, can i legally import it in a non running state?
Where and how can i register it?
Does it have to be 100% stock when i import/ register it?

Hope some can point me in the right direction!!

i've heard (though i don't know for certain) that it's less asspain to RHD convert a USDM car than it is to get an import certified.

I've heard this too, I think in fact, that you can't import a car model thats already here for road use. You'd have to have it sent through Canada first and then brought down.

If it has a regular VIN#, it should be easy to import since all the crash data is already done by NHTSA. Is it a GTO, or a 3000GT/Stealth? A 3000GT/Stealth should be easy since they were sold here - so I'm guessing it's a GTO?

I was thinking about the crash data too actually.

With a normal 17 digit VIN and being a make/model that was sold in the US by the tens of thousands, I can't imagine you'd have any trouble - but you never know with government regulations. It would definitely be easier than trying to bring a Skyline or something.

I would send an email to, I'm guessing, NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) and see if they have an answer for you.

Congrats man! I am unsure how hard it is to get a non-running vehicle imported, but I'd imagine it could take some time to get everything in order.
