Transfer case breather plug....is it supposed to have a ^ in it?

ok, so I pulled my old transfer case off and the breather plug looked fine, just had a small ^ in it and that was it. Looks pre made, like it came like that. I just want to know if its suppoed to be like that or not. I know a breather should have a vent, but without that little ^ cut in it it would have no other way to vent? Anyone shed some light on this for me?

not sure. my transfer case didnt have one (was ripped off) so i just stuck a rubber cork with some RTV in the hole. I drove like that for a while then once i got a spare T-Case i pulled the cork and rtv'ed the breather from my spare onto the T-Case in the car. my breather looks just like this Breather Tranny + Transfer Case 3S*-*Mitsubishi 3000GT*/*Dodge Stealth Parts but if i was able to run with a cork in the hole with no issues than i doubt a small cut or pinch will do any damage.

I made a diagram for anyone who wants to upgrade their T-case breather system to keep fluid in the case under hard acceleration or high speeds.

Yes, it's supposed to have that slit in it. If it's not leaking, then you shouldn't need to modify it.

mine IS leaking thats why i want to modify it. I thought the breather was faulty, but thats why. I guess boosting at 20 psi cause that

the boost doesn't make a difference. When I rebuilt mine with the ss tcase, it began leaking and I definitely was not boosting over 7 psi. You can make your own setup to keep it from leaking out. It's really easy. You wouldn't even need AN fittings. Just a couple of barbs and a tank of some sort.

Sure man! I'll make you a surge tank out of aluminum. It will be about the size of a Red Bull can. I'll supply a breather and tap it to accept 3/8 FIP on the drain. All you have to do is tap the breather hole on your T-case and screw in an FIP to 6-AN fitting, run some Earls hose, and screw another FIP to 6-AN fitting into the surge tank. Sound like a deal? Prolly going to charge $50 or so.... will be sweet! Anyone else want one?

EDIT: You'll need enough hose to run a line from the T-case itself to a mounting point on the firewall (approx 3 feet). I'll also supply a saddle clamp to mount the surge tank in the engine bay on the firewall near the battery.

The setup can also be used on the differentials and the transmission for anyone looking for a high performance racing setup on their drivetrain. It keeps the fluids from burning up, expanding and evacuating fluid which leads to running a differential, t-case, or trans low or dry (another reason why they blow up when we race them), and keeps the cases from pressurizing and blowing the seals when they get hot or the OEM breathers are not functioning properly.
