Also, I'm pretty sure the only reason Subaru uses a top-mount is because the boxer motors have a much lower CoG, and all the mass is way low in the engine bay. They have plenty of space up top for an intercooler, so they put it there. It'd be very easy to heatsoak though, it's definitely not going to be as efficient as a FMIC or SMIC would be. Plus, where the heck would you put it on a 3/S?
i always thought the subaru's had the top mount because they were developed from "rally" racing which has a lot of debris?

That is probably also a good reason that they designed it that way. From what I remember, the Evo has always had a FMIC, even the rally cars, correct? As long as your front end armor plates are properly designed, you'll be able to protect your intercooler against most impacts, unless you plow full-on into a tree.

We produce the water to air system using a heat exchanger which has been showing less then 1 psi loss as well as running cooler air on the streets over a FMIC. We are also working on two different designs for the SMIC kits. basically a street/track system and a full race system

with water to air you don't really have to have much water...just enough to flow through the pipes....reduce the amount of water by using thinner pipes and less space in the water jackets. I liked the idea of water to air but it always came down to too much extra complication great if you can develop a kit but it's something else to make sure is water tight, another pump to run, another set of cables to route..
