What? Why? What sense does it make for it to be legal to carry a lethal weapon, but ban the use of non-lethal weapons. Sh-t, the government should try to encourage people to carry tasers instead of firearms.
Ironically, the non-lethal ranged weapons (beanbag guns, FN-303, etc.), are illegal. So I can defend my home with a fully automatic weapon with armor-piercing steel-core rounds (expensive), I can even buy a 20mm cannon (very expensive), but I cannot use a beanbag gun...Logic fail!
Actually tasers (they're spelled with an 'S' not a 'Z') and stun guns aren't legal everywhere in the US, and there's also different definitions of tasers. Most folks consider anything that is designed to deliver an electric shock a 'taser', but that is incorrect. All tasers are stun guns, but not all stun guns are tasers (like all nickels are coins but not all coins are nickels).
The term 'taser' is properly reserved for the type that can fire the barbs from a distance. The term 'stun gun' is used for any device meant to deliver an electric shock to incapacitate. Tasers also use a higher wattage than stun guns. There are civilian version of tasers that can fire from a distance, but they have shorter ranges and lower wattages.
In Michigan for instance, it is not only illegal to use, but to even OWN any device designed to deliver an electric shock to another person. That definition means you can't legally own any type of stun gun or taser. Granted, there ARE some folks trying to change the legislation on this, but at this time, the law still stands.
So no, it is not legal to own or carry a taser or stun gun everywhere in the US. Even in some areas where you ARE allowed to carry a stun gun, tasers (the ones that can fire barbs from a distance) may not be legal. Check your local legislation.
Similarly, although Pepper spray IS legal in MI, it is only legal for civilians to carry civilian doses of it, i.e.
Not more than 35 grams of any combination of orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile and inert ingredients (CS gas); or
A solution containing not more than 2% oleoresin capsicum (pepper spray) and is used in the protection of your person or property which would justify the use of physical force. It cannot be sold to a minor.

When's the last time you had to pull a gun for your personel protection or freedom?
Here's the thing: People are stupid by nature. Not all, but alot. I'm glad I live in a country that doesn't allow crazy assed humans to own guns.
While I'd love to own a gun for the cool factor, (you know, at night time I'de dress up with the gun belt and nothing else and be baddass in the mirror. Don't laugh, I know you bitches do that) I just dont need a gun in my country.
Scotty
Luckily I never have had to. But my dad pulled his gun on some crazy bastard who was beating on our door at 2 am several years ago. I'd rather have the gun, and not have to use it, then not have it, and need it.
EDIT: I find it laughable you say that "I'm glad I live in a country that doesn't allow crazy assed humans to own guns."
I'd venture a guess that its the crazies and the criminals that have guns, while law abiding citizens do not. In cities in the US where there are "gun bans" crime rates are higher than in areas where there are no such ban. Why is that? Thats because its the crazies and the criminals that still have guns, while the average citizen can't protect themselves.

Why do you find that laughable? That's how I feel Brian. Next you'll tell me my opinions are incorrect. lol
While we can't compare crime rates between the US and Australia due to the amount of people who live in America v ours, and while I really dont want to start an argument on guns vs no guns, the simple fact is that if the justice system actually worked the way it should, you wouldn't need guns. People know they can get away with breaking the law because some hot shot lawyer will get you off, or you can blame playing video games when you were a kid. Nobody seems to take responsibility for their actions anymore.
Anyways, we are straying OT here. Back to weapons, I mean walking sticks.
Scotty
While it may be true that some hardened, serious criminals over there may be able to get their hands on firearms, in general they're pretty darned difficult to come by. All you have to do is look at statistics of crimes involving firearms per capita as well as the number of people killed by firearms per year per 100,000 people for example.
You don't have to worry about the average nutjob going off the deep end and pulling out a gun to kill all the other mailmen, or some crazy Korean kid blowing away a bunch of classmates and professors. If you embarrass some idiot in front of his GF at the bar you don't have to worry about the dumbass going to his car, grabbing his gun and coming back to pop a cap in your ass.
In some major cities like Chicago's Cook County Hospital or LA's LA County Hospital, they get more gunshot wounds per month than the entire country of Australia sees in a year.
Yeah, I think I'd prefer to live somewhere where you 'might' have to use your fists sometime, but the chance of some stupid cowardly punk blowing you away because they don't have the balls to face you toe to toe is remote because they likely don't have a gun or easy access to one.
Unfortunately, as has been mentioned and discussed before, it won't work in the US because there are already SO many guns out there. If anyone tried to ban guns and told folks they had to turn them in to the local PD, it's highly unlikely they would get even 1/4 of them off the street and the small % of people who would voluntarily turn their guns in are not the ones we need to worry about.

We don't allow people that are insane or have a violent criminal record to carry guns. To carry a gun you need to pass a background check before having a carry permit. Law biding citizens should be allowed to carry. If we outlawed guns do you think that would keep them out of the hands of criminals? No it wouldn't, it would only keep guns out of the good guys hands. I'm not going to try and fend off crazed crackheads with a tennis racket that want to gang rape my wife and daughter. I've had to defend my home with a gun before. Luckily nobody had to die but I'm sure as hell glad I had it. Also my wife had to defend herself when somebody was breaking into our home one time. I was at work and this POS pried our front door. I'm so glad I taught my wife to use a shotgun, 3 inch magnum slug FTW. I would hate to think what would of happened to her if she didn't have it.
Edit: My 1st sentence should read "We don't allow people that are insane or have a violent criminal record to get carry permits. Any criminal can get a weapon.
next time take some poisoned meat. problem solved.
