    some timing info

hey guys i need a little help. im trying to set the timing. i know you line the cam gear white dot on those arrows facing inward on the valve covers, but how are the cams supposed to look inside the heads?

also, what should i set the base timing at? my car doesnt have a service manual or anything, but i know i can get it off the web. but, i also know plenty of you guys have experience doing this. thanks guys!

set the cam gear markings on their marks AND set the crank at TDC. the cams are probably going to have a lobe facing downward on cylinder 6, but im not sure how that helps you.

set your base timing at whatever you want it to be. i think 8ish is normal, but my memory is very fuzzy. you can always change the base timing easily (im assuming that you have a 1st gen car)

It's not so much the fuel, as the spark. If the timing is retarded there is less of a chance for detonation, but less power. More advance gives you more power, but increases the risk for detonation.

Most people keep the base timing within OEM spec.

advance will cause a little more lean i suppose. you dont need to worry about the lobes, you need to worry about the cam markings lining up and the crank being at TDC

alright. ill make sure everything is correct. triple check everything. replacing oversized valves arent cheap. machine work period isnt cheap for that matter!

And to answer your previous question, the cam lobe visable under the oil cap should be pointing up when the cam gears are lined up w/ the valve cover.
