2012 GT-R Weight Reduction & More Power
New 2012 GT-R Gets More Power, New Colors
October 11, 2010 by Adam Zillin
If sources close to Nissan are to be believed and in this instance it is very likely, the 2011 R35 GT-R is about to be released with 2 new colors; “Aurora Flare Blue pearl” and a chameleon color style “Nebula ( ネデラ ) Black pearl“. In total, there are going to be 6 colors. The new GT-R is also scheduled to be launched in Japan on October 18th…
This is what the car looks like in the new paint…
While the additions of the new colors are sure to be intriguing, the new GT-R is also getting cosmetic and performance makeovers to keep it looking fresh and performing strong. Nissan have bumped up the power figures around 50 horses for the 6 cylinder twin turbo charged 3.8 liter engine to an estimated 520ps @ 6400rpm or approximately 530hp, with torque receiving a fatter spread to 62.5kgm, up from 60.0kgm and usable between an increased rev range of 3200rpm ~ 6000rpm. While the performance gains are significant for the factory release, they don’t tell the whole story on what Nissan is doing to achieve these gains. We suspect an increase in boost pressures could easily achieve this figure. There was no mention of drivetrain changes or upgrades.
The GT-R loses 10 kilos of weight on top of receiving a slightly shortened wheelbase, down 50mm from the 2010 car to 2730mm. It is slipperier too with the drag coefficient now down from 0.27 to 0.25
The Nebula Black and Aurora Blue vehicles were spotted at the Nurburgring on the 29th of September and reports from the test say that braking performance has been improved, helping to shave 5 seconds off the lap time around the ‘ring, thanks in part to larger rotors – up from 360mm to 390mm on all 4 wheels.
Cosmetically, the R35 GT-R will receive a revised front bumper with LED light recesses, revised rear diffuser and new 10 spoke 20 inch alloy wheels that save the car a further 3 kg’s of weight each corner.
The car will also come with a new grade. Touted to be the entry level GT-R, the “Pure Edition” R35 has an estimated price tag of ¥8,694,000. Or close enough to $106,000 USD. The mid level “Black Edition” is estimated to be ¥9,303,000 ( around $115,000 ) while the top of the range “Premium Edition” will be pitched in at a very similar ¥9,450,000.
