It's has nothing to do with longevity. The pickup is still a straw, the oil cooler holds... an extra quart? You think that helps the bearings? You can buy oil for your operating temp range just like you can buy brake pads for your temp range. Besides, He's controlling the load on the engine with the tune and can cap the ceiling. Must have a ton of data being collected on the engine to feel comfortable enough to do that.
What's your oil temp range at full load and at idle Intropy?
As long as everything is in good order, you wont have an issue. We do this on plenty of cars.
That being said, if you plan on auto crossing or road racing it would be a good thing to have im sure after all the continued high RPMs.
How did you justify your decision? What oil cooler were you running? What were your temps? What are they now? What oil were you using? What oil are you using now?
I essentially deleted mine in 2004 by gutting the oil cooler bypass valve. After examining the oil flow diagram I replaced the valve. My engine bearings looked fine after limited mileage. It's not something I'd feel comfortable with on a daily driver in 100+ deg F weather or during continuous abuse. But that's based simply on my engine's oil pressure (20W-50 or 5W-50) and water temperature.

Ha ha, sorry, I may have gotten everyone worked up over nothing. This is my stockish DD, not the TD05 car. That car has a ginormous front-mounted setrab cooler.
I was having a hard time believing that my rusty old stock cooler, with no ducting (had to remove for the FMIC), and tilted at a 20-degree angle was doing much of anything anyway. I'm running 20w50 now that I deleted it.

just monitor your oil temps. for example, the maximum oil temp spec for a lamborghini V12 is 135 degrees celsius.
Yeah, for a DD without any extended high RPM runs I don't see it being an issue. If you ran a few laps on a roadcourse you'd probably be buying a new engine though. :p

Although not the same car, engine type or displacement, I deleted the oil cooler on my Soarer when I still had it. At the most, all I had was about 10* difference under hard driving conditions. Hardly enough to even pay attention to it anymore. I hope it works out for you in the meantime man.
Yeah I don't expect any problems considering I really only commute in it. Honestly I will probably replace it with a front-mounted aftermarket one, I just needed to fix the leak and thought I'd stir up some shit in the meantime.

well, the FD rx7 comes equipped with 2 oil coolers, one under each headlight. and a single turbo intercooler that is about the size of one of our OEM sidemounts. its all about knock control. the heat of the motor has a lot to do with it. you could tune out the heat with some timing adjustments; but since its just a temporary fix and not something planned for high performance use ("i deleted my oil cooler because it wasnt doing anything anyway!" <- bad idea) i dont see it being a problem.

If it were me, and I was a thermal engineer, I'd have taken to chance to pull some records out or made some assumptions based on similar designs and make a useful post such as:
"Well, the 6G72TT was estimated/tested to produce 460,000 BTU/hr at full load into the cooling system and 238,000BTU/hr into the oil cooling system based on it's available fuel rate and BSFC under full load. The stock cooling system in good condition was designed to expel that with a safety factor of 1.8 to account for eventual cooling system deterioration. Removing the oil cooling system will make the water cooling system pass it's safety factor trying to expel the additional heat under full load or additional load from modifications, which will cause oil to overheat and eventually the whole engine to overheat. OEM applications usually call for a oil cooler of xBTU/hr per 100HP produced at the flywheel, even for 'daily driving' conditions."
The ability to use your current knowledge or ability to gain that knowledge through research, process it, and then release that knowledge for the benefit of others through clear communication is the hallmark of an excellent engineer. Those type of people, whether or not engineers or just people who push their own cars to their own limits, are usually the people who a community such as ours look up to for advice or to admire their accomplishments. Adam as achieved such a position through his accomplishments and such sharing of knowledge.

Idle your car for 20 minutes. Then go and grab the turbine housing with your bare hand, hold for 30 seconds. Let me know if it is hot. The oil is moving thru it while idling that hot. The turbos are introducing heat into the oil. ;)
I'll stick with my oil cooler. It surely can only help and surely can't hurt.
