DailyTech - GameStop Pulls OnLive Coupons From New "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" Boxes
i have no idea how they think they can get away with this shit.
The follow up:
GameStop gives $50 gift card to Deus Ex PC buyers, apologizes for removing OnLive coupons | This is my next...
Edit: not that I want to receive an open box when I purchase something new, but this is kinda crappy.
yes, i saw the gift certificate. unfortunately, it's for used games, and only at gamestop. considering the markups they have on used games ($45 used game when the new one is $50--yet trade-in is only $25), they're practically jerking themselves off.
i don't pay full-price for new games, and you see here one of the reasons. last "new" game i bought? $19.99 for a copy of fallout new vegas about 2 weeks ago. haven't played it yet though.
What are you trading in that you get $25 for? All they are is a glorified pawn shop..Not too surprised by this I guess..
I bought a game from gamestop awhile back for 60.00 new.. Took it home played it for about 30-45 minutes and hated it.. I took it back to game stop within an hour and a half and they offered me like 15.00...
Amazon is the way to go when buying games.
I'm with you on that one. I've found that if you're willing to wait 2-3 weeks after a game is released, you'll usually be able to get it for about $30-$40 on Amazon.
Thadd, where all do you buy your new games if not from GameStop? I'll only shop there if they have a clearance.
fallout NV was from target. sometimes i buy on amazon too. just depends where i happen to spot a good deal. $20 is usually a good buy for me, if it's a game i'm sure i'll like.
i buy from Gamestop for the preorder stuff.. I had bought Socom 4 pre-order for a special shotgun, that ended up having worse stats then the first one you start with.. the game I talked about above..
it's all BS with preorders. inside a week, there's a hack/cheat/code online to unlock all of the "gifts" that came with the pre-order-only. lol.
Ipd:forget stores buy stuff on steam. If you wait long enough you will get stuff super cheap. I just bought alpha protocol for 2 bucks and while ago i got a couple crysis games for like 10 bucks. And you dont have to worry about cds codes to install or any of that. Only way to buy games without getting fked
I recently bought NCAA 2012 from Gamestop and this deal is what closed it for me with Gamestop. I took a "NEW" NCAA 12 case up to the counter and the guy behind the counter said, "I think we actually have this used if you want" and I said sure.. Then the other worker said "Nope we got rid of the used ones already." Well because of how gamestop works they took a game out from behind the counter and put it in a gamestop bag and handed it to me. (I had 5 dollars down on a pre order and wanted to use it toward the game which i told em) So I pay with my card and get out to the car and realize that he didn't use the 5 dollars toward the game.. Strike 1.. I get home and take the game out of the bag and not only is it not seran wrapped like a new one is, the plastic outside case is stretched out on the edge where someone had removed the security stickers (there was a new circle sticker holding the case shut) I open up the case and take out the disk and low and behold theres finger prints all over the bottom of the disk.. I searched on google and appearently theres a investigation with Gamestop selling used games as new, and with letting their employees take games home and play em, then bring em back and sell em as new.. basically, there was no way for me to prove it was done before i got it home but I wrote their customer service email they have on their site, and it said something like "We will contact you within 2-3 business days" and still havent heard from em.. tonight was the 3rd night..
Edit: Also, if anyone here has tried to return a game that was new with an activation code in it, and the case was open like I have you were probably told "We can't refund new games that have been opened with an activation code because we don't know if it has been used".. the NCAA 2012 mentioned above does have a code to use.. So if someone bought it for me as a gift "new" and i had it already, i couldn't have even returned it..
WOW. holy shit. i knew they were low, but that's new depths.
i really miss play & trade. we have 3 shitty gamestops in town, but the 1 play & trade closed. sad thing was, play & trade was the only one worth a damn.
My local gamestop is actually decent, which is surprising after reading this stuff. If you pre-order they actually hold the games for you separate from the off-the-shelf games so nothing happens to them by accident.
Sucks you got shafted dude, I'd call and bitch to corporate. You can file a claim in small claims court and get them off their ass and it doesn't really cost you anything ;)
I guess I'll stay away from Game Stop and stick with Amazon...
Amazon all the way! I pre-ordered Fallout NV and Fable 3 and got free shipping on the date of release which was pretty badass!
I like our Gamestop here but I hate one of the guys that works there, he just rambles on about how awesome PS3 is and how badass every new game coming out is going to be. I just wish he would shut up and conduct my business so I can leave.
This.
I've never had a problem out of any of the three Gamestops in my area. I pre-order a game, they put it in a drawer by itself when it comes out and I can pay it off at my leisure. As long as I keep the receipt (I put it in the game's box), I can pretty much return anything. I bought a used game and brought it back a month and a half later (Darksiders, it sucked.) and had no issues. Put the $18 toward Forza 4. Also, if you subscribe to their Twitter feed (I just have their tweets sent to my phone) they notify you when they're doing cool promotions. Just bought Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas for a combined total of around $21.
Also, to the person who bought a new game and then tried to trade it in the same day: Why not just return it? Seriously, if you have your receipt, they will give you your money back. The game sucks, they take it back, sell it for $55. You keep your $60, get to spend it on something better.
They are really good with used games and returning them. However its not true that they will take a new game back once its opened. No matter how quickly you may return to the store, once it has been unsealed (assuming it was sealed when you purchased it) there will be no refund. I have tried many times as lots of games had me severely dissappointed and I was disgusted with them. I tried taking them back the next hour and no luck. From then on I learned to try the games from Piratebay first and make my xbox allow backup games. This way when the game actually lives up to its hype I gladly buy it. If it sucks, I can always get the space back on my hard drive for free :)
Perhaps it's a location thing. When Homefront came out I had it reserved, took it home and played for about an hour (used the online code) and hated it more than spiders. I took it back the same day and they gave me a full refund. Apparently I wasn't the only person who had returned the game the same day because the game blows so much.
Mind you, I picked it up after work so the server issues were fixed by then. I just hated the game.
sucky games are par for the course these days. that's why i almost never buy new. not worth it.
wait 18 months for a GOTY edition & you'll pay less anyway.
welp, great way to piss off their only loyal customers. i don't think a lawsuit needs to happen, they seem to be doing a great job putting themselves out of business.
I'm not a gamer by any means, but I have been to gamestop...
And I thought you guys were smart. GameStop absolutely rapes people... even I know that.
so, went to register the NCAA i mention above tonight with the internet code that comes with it so i can do online play as well and guess what! The code that the employee put in the case with the game isnt an NCAA code! Its a code for Madden!
you should probably think before you post.. they empty the cases for the floor so nothings stolen short of a case if someone takes the case.. Which means... THE EMPLOYEES REMOVED, AND PLACED THE CODES BACK IN THE CASE..
They dont empty and put new games on the floor at gamestop.... At least not the newest ones...
Gamestop keeps their new shrinkwrapped copies of games behind the counter..correct. However, they also take one "BRAND NEW" copy, and open it, and put the game disc behind the counter (along with the instruction manual and codes usually) and place the case on the shelf as a display. (Ya know, so you can see that they have the game.)
Unfortunately, sometimes you go to buy a new copy of a game, and the only "NEW" copy they have is the one they took apart/opened for the display. They then pull the game disc (and other junk) from behind the counter, slap it in the case off the shelf, and sell it to you at NEW price. That's when things get a little sticky with the whole "return/exchange" deal.
May have just gotten screwed by Best Buy pre-ordering Forza 4... Other people are saying that their BB told them they couldn't preorder Forza 4 LCE because corporate told them to stop due to over pre-ordering. Woot, let's see if they have it for me on Tuesday...
Also, as for this statement, you should probably take your own advice.
When a brand new game comes out, they DO NOT open the case to put it on the floor. They leave them in the "New Releases" case behind the counter. Some stores don't even put a box on the shelf, because people will come up to them either way, if they want the game. And that one case that they do open, to use as a display? Stays under the counter until the rest of them are sold out, so they don't have to go through the trouble of opening up another case.
um.. yes the do open em for the floor. My gamestop, not that i know how yours is ran, but the one here takes like.. 5 or 6 and empties the cases to display the just out popular sections.. Gamestops actually under investigation with the BBB for selling used games new..

GameStop Allegedly Selling Used Games At "New" Prices - G4tv.com
"According to Kotaku, several GameStop stores in America are allegedly (and deceptively) selling used games as new. The site has reported:
"According to a number of GameStop employees and managers across the country, all of which spoke to us on the condition of anonymity, new copies of games rented out to employees are often mixed in with the unplayed display copies. And both are sold at 'new' prices."
This is extremely shady and possibly illegal. As expected, GameStop had no comment at this time. The Federal Trade Commission, however, did. Public affairs specialist Betsy Lordan said:
"The Federal Trade Commission protects consumers from unfair or deceptive advertising and marketing practices, and we encourage any consumer with a complaint about a company's business practices to contact us."
It will be terribly interesting to see how this pans out. The sources seem very solid and with enough complaints, the FTC could launch an investigation (if it hasn't done so already"
i've been using ebay/amazon for all my purchases. my problems have been abating.
