Icelandic Route 66

Abandoned diner /gas station by the old highway nr. 1. in Iceland
This once a must-stop place for every family traveling out of Reykjavík city (Capital of Iceland), has now been shut down and abandoned for 20 years due to a tunnel that bypasses it's location.
I have many good childhood memories from there and re-visiting this place in it's current condition was quite surreal.
This closed part of the highway is 60miles long.
The road hardly sees more then two or three cars a day
If you’re a fan of challenging bends, with great views, long fast straights and little to no traffic this is the road to drive.
This place is located in the bottom of Hvalfjörður, South-Western Iceland.

That road looks in damn good shape for one that's been by-passed and hardly used and also probably spends 4 or 5 months out of the year under snow and ice.

Yes the road was getting really bad few years ago.
The had to fix it as it was the alternative road if something happend in the tunnel.
