Anyone know about BR's new TD-04? Supposed to be 9mm bigger than a 19T wheel? WOOT!

Was just talking to my buddy, Chris, Neighbor next door that owns a Genesis. Apparently BR just recently started building super TD-04's. They are intended to be used as bolt on turbos for the Genesis platforms. I don't know much about the Genesis boards but I do know the New Sonata and Genesis both have twin scrol TD-04 19T options from the manufacturer. So what's the deal with this supposid 65mm TD-04 compressor wheel? 19T is generally around 56mm so 65mm that's friggin HUGE! Anyone hear anything about this development?

Turbine wheel too small. I wouldn't recommend going any larger.

Isn't Dr's comp wheel on the DR 7 series turbos like 66mm +/- ? And he's using an HL right?

LOL you damn criminal... Seriously though, I think it's just a cartridge and re-sleeve. I'm going to call Buschur Racing tomorrow and get the low down. Apparently it's only $900 per turbo for the conversion.

Wondering how well 1.5L will push anything much larger than a 19T through a TD04 wheel. Twin scroll and TD04 manifold are two things I never thought would go in the same sentence.

So is the turbine the same size of the old technology 19T TD04?

Well....without further ado here is the information that many people are patiently waiting on.

March 27th I picked up the Coupe at the dealership. March 30th it arrived to the shop and we began R&D. On April 6th we ordered a brand new turbo from Hyundai. We received it within a week from the dealership.

The stock internals are SMALL. We were amazed to see wheels that small. Its been awhile to see something that size. lol The stock internals are rated for a maximum WHP in the ball park of 250-260.

With the turbo in hand we contacted our good friend Mike over at Blouch Turbo in Pennsylvania to give us a hand in coming up with a new upgraded combination for factory turbocharger. After Mike and the rest of the Blouch team received the turbo they had it for less than a week and it was on the way back to us with a new combination installed that they feel is a good starting point to seeing where the stock turbo housings will allow us to go.

We received the turbo back to find the factory compressor wheel was upgraded to a Blouch 35lb per min billet compressor wheel and the small stock turbine wheel was swapped for an upgraded TD04HL turbine wheel. This combination is said to be good for about 350whp.

After the Blouch treatment she now looks a little something like this:

This turbo has been on my desk since we received it back. We want to see what we can make on the factory turbo before jumping the gun to upgrade the turbo like others are doing. In order to further progress on the project we're at the mercy of getting some software to tune the car with. Thats the hold up right now.

Doing an upgrade on the factory turbocharger has many advantages over just switching to a turbo kit. If any of you have followed what we've done on the Evo we have pursued running a stock appearing turbo on the cars. There are a few reasons why. Price stays down, they offer a better spool up than a bigger framed turbo, they keep the fun factor of ripping around in the car, you have the stock appearing "sleeper" look and not to mention we have them pumping out some major power. Last year we built a stock appearing turbo Evo that went mid 9's in the quarter.

We offer 2 different "flavors" now in stock appearing for the Evo. A mild upgrade and also something a bit more wild.

I know some will ask "Why stick with the factory turbo with upgraded internals instead of just putting a complete kit on with a bigger turbo." The reason being is this.... coming from a 500+whp Evo powered with a larger 30series based turbo as well as driving plenty of Evo's and other cars with bigger turbos on them I can tell you that a stock appearing smaller framed turbo is a LOT more fun to drive around. After driving my car and then hopping into a car with a stock turbo or a 20G it almost made me want to take my turbo off just for more fun. If the Coupe pans out to be just like those other cars I think a bolt on 400whp stock appearing turbo will be the ticket for FUN.

Ive been quite a few places with the Coupe and one of the many comments I get is "So when is the 35R going on?" My reply "Probably never." A big turbo is fun for big power, drag racing, highway runs, etc... its not that FUN feeling though like a smaller turbo has when you can rip around town, hit some back road twisties, etc...a smaller turbo just makes the car more enjoyable to drive. I may put a big turbo on later just to see what we can do down the quarter. Only time will tell once we get into the testing of these stock appearing combination's.

Getting the perfect combination will take a little time but if you bare with us I'm sure it will be some interesting info as we start to test these and learn about the Coupe and its performance even more. We welcome you to come along for the ride as we dip further into this venture.

So it is true... Yup says it right there on the stamp plate on the turbo.

Couldn't get any info on the major or minor but the compressor wheel average is 65mm. That's a big ass TD-04 upgrade!

Uh... Buschur sold the genesis coupe and isn't perusing this anymore. At least that's what Dave told me when I inquired about it a few weeks ago.

He did back nix the project however the wheel was infact cut. I would suspect Blouch still has the design spec and can have the wheels cut. I called them a few minutes ago and am awaiting a call back to find out the details. I'll be checking on the billet wheel spec and the housing or core requirement to accept the conversion.

I'll post up what I find out as well as pricing if it's still available.

Hmm... I remember all the old stories about the GT368 turbos being "too large" for the turbine they used, and were unbalanced. If these turbos are truly that big... well then I guess the old thinking of pairing a large compressor wheel with a tiny td04 turbine needs to change. Or possibly GTPro was simply slapping together a crappy turbo and that is why they never lasted.

What was the compressor wheel average on that setup? Wasnt that still smaller than a 19T compressor wheel? There's 5 people in my local chapter running 368's and none of them have problems aside from a couple needing more tuning. Was there a problem with them at one time or something?

A lot of people grenaded their cars because of 368's, they fell out of favor pretty quickly, but in the old days, there simply weren't that many turbo choices available to us. Both the turbine and compressor specs are bigger than the 19T specs, according to Stealth316. The common theory was that the compressor wheel was simply too big to be matching with the turbine that they chose, and as such, quickly became unbalanced. This may be true, as the "T" wheels are lighter than the old turbo wheels of the past, so going with a bigger wheel now may be possible with new turbo tech. At any rate, there was a long list of people who had 368's that needed to be rebuilt and eventually gave up on them.

Just talked to Mike over at Blouch and he won't release any specific spec information on the the wheel. He did mention current turbo tech and touched on how the upgrade is possible. As you mentioned UT, Mike stated it ties back to adequate pairing with the turbine wheels. You can run a bigger compressor wheel then what was once percieved if you lighten up the turbine wheel. In this case the compressor wheel must be paired with an HL wheel, and only an HL wheel or something lighter.

We also discussed critical pieces of the setup and prevention of stall and surge. I mentioned to him I had surge problems awhile back and resolved them by utilizing a combined "Y" junction for my turbo intakes. I revertwd back to the stock bubble with hard pipes having and fed them from the same source and dramatically reduced surge. The second thing I mentioned to him was changing the routing and diameter of my intercooler pipes into the intercooler core. I changed the piping to equalize the pressure differentials between the two. That was critical.

The wheel does exist, and the upgrade can be made thru Blouche. Mike will not release any information on them other than "the compressor wheel is bigger than a 16g, it's billet, and it has been tested and proven to flow between 35-37 lbs per minute.

From what I could find from the CODSM turbo tech archive the flowtest results on an MHI 16g place it between 26-28 lbs per minute and the EVOIII flowtest results are in the range of 38-40lbs per minute. Now you really can't compare the two because on one hand we have a TD-04 housing and in the other we have a TD-05 housing, they are different frames. In terms of airflow volume it puts this right smak dab in the middle of the two.

The cost for the upgrade is $900 plus an additional cost associated with a rebuild should any bearing wear or seal damage be present. Grand total with your own cores he mentioned would be rougly $2500.

Signed, stamped, delivered, 100% TD-04 bolt on setup. Takes 7-10 business days to turn around a set.

Now I just wonder how this compares to the Dr-700

I've never ran a DR setup or seen any actual lb. per min. results on the 700 series turbochargers. I can say I've ran a Blouch setup and had tremendous sucess with it. Same goes with Forced Performace. Either of these retailer produce excellent turbo's and should have a similar performance expectations with the emergence of new turbo tech.

The DR TiAl turbine is obviously a step above an HL. No one to my knowldege other than DR will ever produce something like that for such a small frame turbocharger.

The spool time I'm less concerned about as I can manipulate boost onset with some trick tuning using a standalone, give it a little more pep with some manifold port work, and ofcourse do some headwork.

Both of those compressor wheels have the evo 3 cores on the compressor wheel for a lighter wheel , quicker spool, and more flow than the traditional mhi.
I was told they will be on their website shortly as its in stock just needed to update the website.

So you mean these

Is that link for a distributer or a builder? Are these your builds overclock? I have never heard of this vendor till about a month or so ago when someone posted a link. Anyone used them before? Are they reputable? No offense if this is your company marc... just never heard of it or seen any reviews before.
