Installed B&M oil cooler in the side (big, fmic, fan, pics, etc).

I had the B&M 70266 8x11" oil cooler in the front when I had dsm sidemounts, went with a FMIC last fall and needed to move the cooler to the side. I didn't bother last year because I new it would barely fit and would take some work. Decided to tackle it this weekend. I also made some ducting and added Derale 8" fan.

I had to do some trimming where the an fittings connect to the cooler. It really just barely fits. It is literally touching on all 4 sides to something. Bumper still fits without any bulge :)

I still have to do some wiring and figure out the crash bar....

My car's achilles heal is now the front left corner :(

Thanks. It took some time that's for sure :( I'll most definitely be there. I still owe you some beers or something for helping me out last year. As it turns out it was the connection to my fuel controller. That is all fixed now :)

Looks great, I like the idea of the air flow trap straight to the oil cooler. Right on!

Btw...where can we get one of those keys like in your sig?

You think at some point you will have the keys that light up?

That reminds me I still haven't cut the key I won at BRG. I need to go to the hardware store today so I might go ahead and get it cut.

As it turns out it was the connector soldered on the board. It's nice to know it wasn't something I did to screw it up :) I would watch out for hardware store cutters. Sometimes they can't properly mount the bulge of the plastic head key. My recommendation would be a private locksmith, they tend to have more experience with more than just house keys. I haven't worked on the light up at all since the first one. I would like to make them but man, I am busy haha.

Hmm so I was curious what people think about when to turn this puppy on. I wanted to make it as automatic as possible and I don't want to add additional temperature switches. So basically that means tying it into the radiator's low or high. What would be the arguments against one or the other? I would imagine that the water temp will rise faster than the oil temp but the oil will take longer to release heat. Also there is the temperature bypass for oil cooler so can I even make the oil "Too cool"? I don't want to add additional restriction.

I did have to do some minor trimming. I'll try and get some pictures up tonight.

yeah there is a separate thermostat for the oil cooler, but I think the oil thermostat opens at a really low temperature. you'll find that because water is so much better of a conductor that your oil temps will always be within 5-10 degrees of your water temps. the only time it really differs is on the road course.

So theoretically I could run a huge ass fan on the oil cooler and not worry about it being too cold because the temp bypass would stop it from going to the cooler?

yeap, if the oil gets too cold the oil themostat will start to close. true, you'd be cooling oil that's just sitting at room temperature, but it's not gonna hurt anything (other than using fan power)

not sure on the exact temperature, but 4g63 oil cooler bypass spec is 100degC. ours is probably similar.

Had to trim around part of the headlight bucket and the fender. I could have used a 120 to 180 degree hose end and might not have had to trim as much but I didn't want to buy another 20 dollar fitting.

Covered the hose in wire loom to protect other parts from rubbing. I also had to tie it tight to make sure it wouldn't hit the alternator pulley.

Here is the other side of the cooler. I cut two lines (tin snips) into the sheet metal and folded a flap up to make more room in the hole for the new line + intercooler piping.

The big thing is to make sure your npt to an adapters screw all the way into the oil cooler. It was tight and I even had to file the adapter a little to avoid having the cooler crack.

While the core would fit upside down the fittings would be sticking down more and I'd be worried about ground clearance and breaking off the fittings. Doing it this way lets me use the available space on the sides for the fittings. Also I'm not even sure if it would fit to the side of the ypipe. Currently the yipe is tucked right up against the body for that to fit with the rest of the piping.

Because when you shut off the car all the oil in the cooler doesn't go back into the pan. It will give a false reading on the dipstick. Oil coolers need to always be mounted with the fittings up.

I'm surprised that the oil will drain back past the oil pump without it turning?

Pour oil into the top of the pump (on a bench or something) and watch it for an hour or so.

I do realize there's some leakage out of the cooler but I figured if you overfill it slightly all the time it won't hurt anything...

It depends on how much the oil cooler holds, where it's mounted in relation to the oil level, etc, etc... It's really just best not to do it. Keep it filled all the time and you don't have to worry about it.

Well I have been running this setup for about a year now. I had no issues with overheating with the fmic and cooler. I put about 5k miles on the car. No blown fuses or anything from that derale fan and it still turns on as it should when the other fans when stopped. Very happy with the way it turned out!

Very cool, I've been running the derale for quite some time. If you don't overload the thing it works great.

Nice, I had no idea that cooler would fit there. I may rethink plans for mounting mine.

What did you use for mounting hardware?

What are your oil temps on the street (and ambient temps for that matter)? The setup looks good!

And BTW...the stock oil stat starts opening in the high 150's.
