Rally Coilovers! Anyone?

well, I've popped some Tein Flex coil-overs on my car and well they are pretty bad...I've played with the dampening rates and nothing seems to really help...SO

I'm looking around for something with considerable more travel, I'm not sure what the stock travel is but it'd have to be 3-4 times that of what the flex have which by way of shocks pretty much puts me straight into rally territory.

anyone played around with shocks of this level? Ksport have some that look like they'd be interesting to "try"

Spring rates: 504 lb Front(9kg ish) and 392 lb Rear (7kg)

Stock Tein flex are 12kg front and 5kg rear

Tein flex's are ment to have a total travel of what...4" maximum? :| not goooood enough.

1G dsm suspension is not drastically different in front from the 3S setup. You may want to try Drummond Motor Sports (DMS). When I had rally dreams for my dsm's they were on my list as you see them on many SCCA rally cars and were very popular on the dsm's that rally.

Yeah I own a set and I love them. Just set the ride height to where you it unless you use the EDFC unit.

To my knowledge, the EDFC doesn't control ride height.

D2 makes rally coilovers for our cars, i think its pricey though.
edit: ~2 grand, also no clue on travel or quality

yeah the Ksport are pretty much the same shit as D2....I'm currently asking them quite a few questions ;)

Good luck with that. D2 and KSport are both the same Chinaware. A fellow German 3s driver works as engineer in China and managed to find out where they are actually made.
He's been in China for almost 15 years now and he sais he'd never put a chinese made suspension on his car.

well, for 1K (that I've found the AR series for) they'd have paid them selves off if they last even a year.

I ran the drag D2's this year with a custom spring rate and never had an issue with travel even with the car slammed, i never bottomed out the suspension.

We've used them in a bunch of cars and yes they are all the same company but they all work, we've never had an issue with any of them.

problem I have is our roads...lots of dips and pot holes and 2" lips on driveways....really bad road repairs, I tried driving over some road like this at 100kmh and I swear the car almost jumped off the road (as in bounced high off the road :p)

I would too like to find coilovers with enough travel .

my problem is I want to go faster without the car bottoming out..that's not possible even with the teins at stock suspension height. and I can't go with 19" rims with 40 profile rubber and keep the stock struts.....so here I am.

I'll swap you my stock ECS struts and Kings springs ultra lows for your teins.

Thats half the case, I do want some comfort but these coilovers are almost not driveable if the road isnt smooth enought . if speed is conserned and it is I dont like to drive well under the speed limit teins cant absorb bumps and teins simply bottom out and then lift off the ground and I´m allover the road this doesnt happen with stock ecs suspension .

Lol, so don't hit the potholes. that's good defensive driving. I have and love them. I avoid huge bumps and normally do 80 on the freeway w/ ease. Just keep driving and you'll figure it out.

no potholes here its frost in the ground that lift the ground and create bumps and I dont mean speed bumps or potholes etc.. Freeways dont have this problem .

I once had a guy throw an orange at my car when he thought I was being an idiot (was just avoiding the holes)

this does not work when your following other cars or going up driveways/over bumps that span the entire section of road or going around a hairpin at speed....carpark speed bumps (at speed)

Really we have a problem and need to find a solution..so if anyone is running non-stock long travel suspension feel free to post it up!

I feel your pain. I have the same TEIN COILOVERs and same bumpy roads, even worst I think. sometimes, I try not to hit the roof with my head :)
The adjustment doesnt help at all. i wonder how it would feel after changing the wheels with the new 19" volks and a lighter car.

anyway, I've seen that on the Porsche forums many peoples are runing the KW V3 and they use them on race purpose and also for road driving, and they are many.
also what I've read about them on our cars, is that it will get the smothest ride out of all. and all of that because of the Bound/Rebound adjustments capabilities- like on some motorcicles. the TEIN are just Bound.
with all the money invested in your car I wouldnt go with these D2 or KSport.

And why not.. My car is going on at least year 4 with the ksports (probably year 5 or6 because the owner befor installed them) and they're all the original ones. No leaks, none blown, no sagging..and my car is slammed as much as it could be without rolled fenders turn all the way up to the hardest setting

could be done but your are looking at +10k, I have been told öhlins are the way to go for reasonable money +3500 .

anyone been able to get a solid number on the total amount of travel the stock shocks have?

not cheap but somewhat reasonable i forgot to mention I´m talking about street model öhlins coilovers, rally coilovers will cost a lot more the thing is öhlins are hard to find since they are based on the pcv design shocks that are now discontinued still waiting to get specs and I would really like the new dfc shocks that I have heard are ultra smooth. you know mitsubishi used öhlins on its own WRC cars :)
then again they are nothing like rally coilovers they are street model coilovers.

I think any coilover is possible with 3s since I have seen cars imported from japan with many different coilovers just to name few that I remember :

Hate to say it but even those look shorter than stock travel, hows this for a rofl, I gave the car a good beating, and on a fairly normal road the car managed to bounce off a bump so hard the front ACTUALLY lifted off the ground...you can tell becouse when it does the steering becomes as light as hell (I've had the car airborne a few times) :|

been there done that unintentially it sucks.

for Coil-overs to be legal in australia the lower part of the shock can not be adjustable, so to workout exactly what height I want the car at I need to measure the distance from mount to the upper post... if I can I'll see if I can measure where the upper limit of the tire is and see if we can get a spring perch that's higher (make it nice and easy to clear the suspension)

Ksport came back about the GR(Gravel Rally) range of coil overs, the spring rates are 6kg for the front and 5kg for the rear. shame the quality control isn't there :|

well, it's official, the Teins are GOING, I went around a corner last night, hit a bump and BOING the car was lifted of the road and lost traction for long enough for the car to end up in the gravel ~half a foot from the guard rail (armco) before I managed to pull it back...I was ONLY saved by the fact that it was an S bend and managed to nurse it around the initial curve.

what about these KSports?

Not legal in Australia cus the lower mounting section is not fixed. Ie it can be adjusted. Stupid rule really. As far as we know the only road legal coilovers in this country are Tein. But there are so many imports around riding on coilovers so I don't think the cops now what's legal or not or they just don't care.

I've given up worrying about the legality at this stage, apparently pedders do rally coil overs so when I'm next feeling flush I'll be talking to them.

How about throwing on some springs/stock struts with aftermarket sways?

ECS? my last car [Mazda MX-6 GT Turbo] had ECS [or whatever Mazda called it] and it was great. Just left it on "sport" the whole time except over speed bumps and in car parks. It made a noticable difference. On sport over a speed bump it would be quite harsh then on "soft" it would just float over without any harshness. The ECS on the GTO is disabled. Has been since I got the car.

on another project I'm working on to fit wider tyres, I swaped the rear 6kg coils to the front to replace the front's 12kg coils...

They are actually coiled 4mm thinner...does not make them fit on the front shocks so well...showing stock front vs rear coil:

and this shot shows the TOTAL travel compressing that the teins have...pretty shit...I'd say somewhere around 2-3" maximum (once you talk droop + the top hat that sits over the shaft...)

Soo definitly need to get some rally shocks...4-6inch of travel is a MINIMUM that I'd expect for any road car.
