-a million dollars
-and possible a second million dollars
If you guys really want to pay that i wont mind :P
AEM EMS that is tuned like an ARC2 for the cost of a SAFC.
I am still trying to figure out my EMU. OH BOY.
One that works, (set it and forget it)
Pure auto learn - nothing more needed.
:stupid:
Hmmmmmm. That quite possibly could be arranged. I might need some help with it if you guys want to see it materialize however, im not much of a tuner :P
Post-ECU injector control, or timing control. Some way to make injector control not fuck up timing.
I see no major issues doing any of those other than the auto learn, but im still doing some research so its a possibility. Can anyone give me some info or links as to why the injector control messes with timing? I cant see why the ECU would adjust timing unless there is knocking.
Lets compile a list or two...
Independent Variables (sensors, inputs):
-?
Dependent Variables:
- Injectors Control
- MAF Signal
- Timing
I'm sure you know this but the emanage ultimate can do that.
The FAST systems for domestics seem to have it down pat. With a wideband and 3-4 pulls they are on the money. The biggest obstacle to that is they are not piggybacks. Part of the difficulty in tuning is fighting the stock ECU and not really seeing where it is on the maps.
The best use of effort at this point IMO is to continue the research on the flashable stock ECUs.
Anything in the piggyback world is pretty much already done.
Yeah, I can agree with that. Im trying hard to find something new for these cars as I constantly see members wishing the system was this or that. With my limited access and time its almost easier for me to design something than to experiment.
Ill add it to my list of things to look into :) officially changing the thread to "what should I make?" haha.
I'd have one auto-adjust the fuel curve by looking at a wideband, even at WOT.
Add/decrease timing by itself according to knock history once it figures out a pretty good fuel map.
ECMLink...
Link isn't really a piggyback, though.
Flash tuning allowing the use of the hotwire MAS that comes with the ARC2.

As old as these cars are, and how decrepit our stock ECU's are, you'd think that 20 years later, there would be a simple, easy, bolt in standalone ECU that didn't cost over a grand, that all you needed to do was set injector size and have some ability to adjust the airflow measured in a variety of ways, while keeping timing inline with stock programming for any given output.
The AEM is still the best solution as an end all be all. It just isn't nearly as easy to use as it should be, not to mention cost prohibitive with all the extra things you need to buy to really get the full use of it.
Dont you guys like hand tuning your cars? :D
So would you all rather see a stand alone ecu thats more user friendly and cost effective? Starting from the ground up im sure something impressive will come out of it. Things like wideband or any other after market sensors can be taken into consideration, laptop or physical adjustments for whatever parameters. Im confident I can come up with some easy to use but flexible software.
Auto learn based on some initial setup and a couple pulls seems possible. Then you could use that map as a base if you want to fine tune things or make multiple maps for various conditions, or just leave it be?
Wait. Are you going to design one? :D
If everyone wants one then yes haha. Im not sure if they will after the recent developments with the montero ecu.
New question then...
with how much is on the market why does everyone complain so much? haha
people want something they can install in 10 minutes, pay $100 for, have auto tune, and zero driveability problems....not happening.
What I would like to see someone do is build a montero ecu kit that didn't have a huge markup. Hello mail order tunes...
Well, as easy as it is to get to our ECUs... You SHOULD be able to install it in 10 minutes. Price... Oh, to have a fully functioning standalone ECU is worth about $600 to me. And I wouldn't want auto tune. Basic tuning should be done by the user, so long as the internal programming is correct to get you in the ballpark. I mean let's face it, if you are swapping out your ECU, you damn well ought to know how to tune your car a bit!
So, lets just say I could make a plug and play ecu with auto learn and/or full user tuning, full control of the car's functions (auto trans, etc), and a price point of 600 dollars max...
Lets say it probably wouldnt be finished and ready for about another year
Would it be worth the effort?
I don't know what your background is, but people like megasquirt have more than one person working on it and they've been working for years. It seems ambitious to me to be able to achieve that by yourself in a year, but if you could and it worked I'm sure you could make some sales.
The year target was pretty ambitious, ill admit that. Im one of those "why make things more complicated than they should be" kind of guys, and Im about to graduate with a computer engineering degree, so thats my background. I think mega squirt is more complicated than needed as it needs to work with any engine setup, where as something I make might have the overall design and concept to work with elsewhere, but the specifics would be catered to these cars.
From a computer and programming standpoint everything is easy...just look at it as input -> do something -> output and youre golden. The electrical end is more difficult, and will probably take the longest. I may be simplifying things a bit, but sometimes I do that to make sure I dont get overwhelmed and actually start working on a project.
If anything the project will only be delayed due to money, as im making next to none and am paying for school. Not being able to afford a vr4 will also set me back, as most of my prototypes will need to be on my NA.
Doing it in a year is ambitious if you have a full-time job. I've made a 'functioning' ECU based on a MPC-5555 in one of my classes a year ago in about 6 weeks with one other member.
Well id really like to improve both. As far as computer and programming i mostly meant internal to the ECU. Ill still look into the mega squirt option though.
I think something like AEM would be great. Plug and play, alittle easier to tune, without loosing tuneablilty, and costs in the Emanage ultimate range. That would be perfect. Im not sure i would trust the "auto learn" thing though.
