I will be going to my credit union in a few weeks to talk with them about a car loan. I am doing this, pretty much solely because i need to get some established credit.
I would like to stay between 20 - 30k. no trucks or SUV's, and I want something classy aka not a camry or some other every day vehicle.
possible choices i have been thinking about are:
- Audi A5/S5
- BMW 335i (twin turbo model)
- BRZ/FRS
Ready, set, go!
What do you have in terms of cars now? What are your priorities (reliability, speed, mileage, cost, comfort, seating capacity, etc)? Do you get much snow?
i have the vr4 and i dd a mazda 6. in my past i had a lifted and built jeep wrangler and a $400 1990 POS corolla.
i want something fun and reliable. fun doesnt mean fast (take the FRS for instance). cost is obviously important hence the pricing i gave... otherwise i am up for whatever.
i gave example cars so you can see kind of what im after. and ky doesnt get much snow.
You're looking for class, BMW/Audi is my vote.

I wouldnt own a german car w/o a warranty.
So that leaves the Toybaru cars.

I have a repair shop...and I HATE phucking European cars. They're absolutely horrendous to work on/own/maintain...the people who have em, really pay the premium for the name. The engineering is backwards as hell and so overcomplicated its stupid.
Finance an EVO...8/9 wont dissapoint..;)
Only problem with that is..if you start modding it, you might loose interest in your VR-4...:D
another vote for evo.
although, i think the frs isn't bad. probably a bit pricey, but not bad looking, and it's rwd, right?
can you use sti/ wrx pieces for the frs motor? if not, evo all the way. if so. hmmmm. i'm still a mitsubishi fan boy.

ediT: i do have a friend with a 330whatever twin turbo beezmer, and it's a good looking car, with lots of stupid toys.
FRS, Euro cars usually have a maintenance tag on them that no one wants. Google BMW cooling system problems for giggles. Every BMW I have ever worked on has oil leaks as well. Happy shopping!

I really like the brz/frs, but throw the Hyundai genesis coupe into consideration. It is only very slightly bigger which you'll notice when you're inside and has 76 more hp with the 4 cyl turbo. I think the package is called r-spec that gets you brakes, suspension, and wheels. The 13 year model as redesigned and looks a lot better than the outgoing model imho. All this for around 28k iirc, it's been a little while since I looked it up.

If the maintenance doesn't scare you I'd go BMW all the way. Fun, classy, comfortable. If you want something easier to take care of, I'd probably do BRZ although I've always liked the Genesis (I'd have to test drive them both).
I DD a 2009 BMW 328i. It's definitely not fast but quick enough if you rev it up and there's no temptation to mod it like there would be on the 335i. I've got the 6 speed M-sport if you find rowing gears fun. I do :) It gets 24 mpg on my crappy 30mph stop and go commute.
After 3 months behind the wheel, still loving the G35... It was a LOT less than 20 to 30k...

why new? you don't have screw yourself on depreciation just to establish credit. i'm sure you can easily swing something for 10-15k...possibly less...and still establish your credit. it's really a function of making the regular payments without fail, much more than it is about the amount you borrow.

That's true, I took a loan for an 8 thousand dollar car right after college. Six ish months later I bought a house. They took into consideration the payment history more so than the payment amount.

I think he meant new to him. A brand new BMW or A5/S5 is more like $45K. 2010 models should be in his price bracket. If you need a warranty for them you won't get much though as they may have exceed the mileage or time unless someone extended it.Quote:

As far as Evos go... I said I want a classy car. Something with some style. The Evo is cool and all but I have an awd turbo money pit... I'm not buying another. I just want a car to buy and drive. No modding allowed!
That Buick was pretty slick, I won't lie. I considered a g35/37 but I am admittedly negatively biased on the VQ engines. I am on the boxer engine too which causes some hesitation on the toyobaru combo.
I will be meeting with my credit union in 2 weeks and figuring out the best plan going forward on the price to aim for and the best credit increase for money spent.
Another thing to consider is resale value. The Audi S5 is a rare car, looks awesome as can be, and I can find one that is an 08 or 09 for mid 30's. With a healthy down payment I can have it bought in 4 years with ease and I will be in good shape on resale value. Idk... there is no "right" answer, but there is definitely a smart answer that can still make me happy.
Oh, and I'll have to check out the genesis. I 'want' a brand new car, but I can't justify losing a lot of money as I drive off the lot.
slk's tend to hold value fairly well once they're in the 20k range. especially the AMG's.
but if you want classy, there's a lot more to consider than just what's been said here. jaguar xke/xkr's. MB cla's. cadillac cts. etc.
The Buick is at the top of my list right now. Just something unassuming about the car. I like it. Top Gear also loved its sister car.Quote:

Man I use to work at a dodge dealership. You must be shorter than 6' because im 6'3'' and with the top down my head stuck out over the windshield. Why was the top down you ask?? Because on almost everyone we got in the top was stuck in the down position. From what I saw they were garbage. Everything but a blast to me lol.Quote:

Thought maybe you were staying away from American brands but started seeing the Buick part way through.
I'd throw a Pontiac G8 in the run. Its classy looking, nice interior (better holden styling), reliable motor and fun to drive out of the box.
Just to throw yet another name out there :D

I drove a BRZ a month or so ago. I think it looks great, handles like a dream, plenty of room and the interior was top notch. I really liked everything about the car except one thing. it's slow. very slow. I currently drive a 02 GS430 by no means a rocket ship but it'll move. that being said the fear of committing to a car payment was the only thing keeping me from buying it. 5 year warranty and 2 year(iirc) free maintaince plan make owning a brand new car much easier to swallow. if you like it all I'd get it. new car with a warranty can't be beat.
but I really like the S5. hands down one of my favorite attainable cars around. I like everything about it. I'd get one of those is maintance and repairs isn't an issue.
I'm not crazy about either one (of that era). The new SLK's are much better looking. If I were to buy a car in that class it would probably be the Boxster, and still then it would have to be a smokin' deal.Quote:
