I am also interested.
Sandblasting does make it smoother but it still leaves a fair amount of texture.
Pete, I took a wire wheel on my drill to the plenum. Took about 10 minutes and looked a ton better than stock...
steve, got any pictures of the wirewheeled plenum?
With an 80 grit blast, yes. ...but you then have an 80 grit surface to smoothen out.
Don't have any pics of the plenum I did... The owner loved the color and texture of the freshly blasted piece so I just installed it on his car as it was.
I think I have a spare NA plenium and lower plenum I can blast and take pics of if you'd like to see it. Remember though, the NA parts are painted so they're going to require a bit more blasting but the surface will appear the same when I'm finished.
My previous job I did a bunch of sandblasting. Aluminum oxide, steel shot and glass bead. Are you hoping to save some work by blasting it first then sanding/polishing it? I would think you would save some time if you knew somebody that had the stuff but I wouldn’t run out and buy it.
Glass beads are what I typically clean them with...I have some picks but it doesn't really smooth anything out, just looks cleaner.
just wanted to say kick ass avatar maximal, vintage sabers FTW
yeah I was mainly just curious if it would be possible to get out the sanding roughness. I didn't have any intention of making it completely smoothed or polished, but wondering if it looks "good enough".
I have a few sandblasted plenums back in VT dude. They clean up nice but are still rough in terms of texture.
anyone ever shave the lettering? i'd like to do that with mine. make it match the valve cover.
Do it man. You have been wanting to do that for awhile now.
My constant battle is just on the pocket side. What parts are these that you have. Sorry OP for the derailment.
Dont bother sandblasting. Use a orbital sander with 150 grit and you would be surprised how easy it is to remove the texture. Its faster if you start with 80 grit and move on to a finish of say 220.
When I did the little I did to mine I used the orbital down to about 220 grit and then went on to the finer grits by hand. Only took a couple hours, a few beers and was not difficult.
any suggestions for angle grinder attachments? i assume i probably shouldn't use my cutoff wheel....
Be careful with the aluminum particulates though. Wear a mask when you grind it off.
You mean I shouldnt have inhaled that shit ?
Research still seems to be up in the air about it all, but i would try to cautious if i were you. Plus a simple dust mask is cheap.
Agreed
be-a-utiful
Killer deal for all the work and that's awesome! That is just the icing on the show car cake!
i'm pretty sure he's making an offer to buy it :dontknow:
Pete, this morning I took some pics with my cell phone, but they didn't turn out at all. But it looks as you would expect... like brushed aluminum. It only takes about 10-15 to do the entire thing and I'm sure you have a drill and wire wheel already. If you don't like it, it didn't hurt anything because you can always polish it after brushing it...
That manifold is awesome, to bad its pointing the wrong way :(
