Well, let's go ahead and do this right.
you must predict this years NC teams and winners in your first post.
I will say... Alabama vs tOSU(yes I had to, only tough game next year is Wisconsin and cal on the road)... Winner prob Bama... Urban will win next year :)
Oregon is done, Stanford? ND? nope back to avg, Florida? B12 no clue
lol, jeff. jeremy, mike and the rest of teh SEC nugswingers couldn't find it within themselves to make this thread.
I'll go Stanford and tOSU. I don't think Alabama will get through the season undefeated and with Kelly leaving Oregon I think Stanford will walk through the Pac15 ro 18 or whatever it is this year.
Is this the last MNC? Playoffs in '14, right?
Can we get the schedules of the contenders? From what I saw of Ohio State's schedule, it's hard to pick against them... Didn't Cal play them tough in the shoe last year? :p
PAC: Oregon, Stanford, USC?
MWC: Boise
B12: OU, Texas, K-State, WVU, Okie State, TCU, Baylor (LOLWTF)
SEC: Alabama, Georgia, A&M, LSU, Florida
B10: Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska?, Wisconsin?
ACC: Florida State, Clemson
Did I miss anybody?
Texas 2013 Schedule

K-State

@ Iowa State
Oklahoma (Dallas)
@ TCU
Kansas
@ West Virginia
Oklahoma State

Texas Tech (Thanksgiving)
@ Baylor
I guess 10-2 (no idea where the losses are) and demand Fiesta.
Yeah, last year for BCS. Yes you missed the Big East, specifically Louisville. They thrashed Florida, and will only be better this year. They should breeze through the BE to get the AQ BCS bowl. They will enter preseason in the top 10. If they can run the table, they've got a shot of making the MNC. Obviously their SoS will be a huge factor, and anything less than undefeated kills their chances.
I figure VT will be back in the mix in the ACC, this year.

WVU '13 schedule
William & Mary - W
@OU - W
Georgia State - W
Maryland(at Ravens stadium) - L (I think we're overdue, and they get us this year)
OSU - L
@Baylor - L
TT - W
@KSU - W
@TCU - L
UT - W
@KU - W
ISU - W
Just a guess. WVU could be slightly better, or drastically worse. There's too many new cogs in the machine. I like what I see, but that doesn't mean it will truly work fluidly.
Jeremy
Nebraska's offense should be really explosive this year with a lot of experienced and talented guys. It really comes down to how the defense plays though. We've got a few promising players on D but certainly nothing to indicate a defense anywhere near as good as 09. I do think tOSU is the team to beat in the B1G. Seems likely that the B1G will have a shot at getting in the championship game this year.

How the other half lives: Evaluating Big 12 recruiting in 2013 Pt. 1 - Barking Carnival
I had no idea KU brought in a class full of jucos. Looks like every week is going to suck again in the B12, haha.
I didn't know that about Kansas, either.
Very good breakdown of WVU's new signees. So pleased with our new class. We've got more DL than the author sees(admittedly not his fault). A LB recruit showed up at 290 instead of 240, so he's most likely going to get injected into the line immediately(with as many LB's as we took in, this is no concern). I have very high hopes for our defense this year. We've finally got physical, dedicated, guys that want to kill everything on the field. Watch out for Karl Joseph, Isaiah Bruce, and Al-rasheed Benton(this kid's highlight reel is just nasty), and a few others looking to make a name.
Jeremy
Wtf is wrong with these kids?

Just a month after reveling in the glory of a national championship, four members of the University of Alabama football team have been arrested after a pair of campus robberies....Three of the players -- defensive lineman Dennis "D.J." Pettway, linebacker Tyler Hayes and running back Brent Calloway -- appeared in 13 games last season. The fourth, defensive back Eddie Williams...According to police, Pettway, Hayes and Williams punched and kicked a student shortly after midnight Monday until he was unconscious...The student's backpack with an Apple Macbook Pro was stolen, police said. About an hour later, Williams allegedly beat up another student until he, too, lost consciousness and took his wallet...The football program suspended all four players indefinitely.

So long as Shane Morris doesn't turn out to be a dud a la Tate Forcier, the Wolverines should have a great up coming season...
K. Joseph impressed the hell out of me against Texas. I didn't even realize he was the one responsible for this...

In other news, Marquis Goodwin ^ looks like he may run a sub 4.3 at the combine (he tweeted something about a 4.28 on his first attempt at a 40 in a long time). Good thing we gave him like 2-3 touches a game.
I wasn't going to bring that up, again. I thought Goodwin was dead. Yeah, Karl is a headhunter and I expect he will be the leader of the D, even as a true soph.
One of our JUCO commits, Mario Alford, is a true 4.3 flat 40 guy. Lots of people claim it, this dude is the real deal. Look for him to step in to the slot and fill the void left by Tavon Awesome. Same build, 5'9" 175lbs. Of which, I can't wait to see Tavon's 40 at the combine. He's got a nice quote going around from Todd McShay..."Tavon Austin might be the quickest human being I've ever studied on tape".
Jeremy
Is the NCAA considering changing rules to eject people for 'dirty' hits? K.Jo may need to adjust a little, but I remember his coverage skills being damn near just as good as his physical tackling...
And yeah, it's always very interesting to see how fast these guys REALLY are. Tavon has better 'football speed' than Marquise, that's for sure, even if 'quise runs a better 40 than Tavon.
Yeah, that just came out. Talking about ejecting players for hits on defenseless receivers. In the case of Joseph v. Goodwin, I don't think it would apply. He was a runner, and he lowered his head. These rules are getting silly, IMO. Football is a violent sport, always has been. Make it safer by making better equipment, I say.
Jeremy
The problem with trying to solve it on the equipment side, is that, while modern energy absorbing materials (foam, rubbers, etc) are pretty amazing, the key to allowing them to really absorb energy is to have lots of distance for the material to deflect. A football helmet only allows for, what, half an inch of deflection in the foam? Whatever the amount, it only prevents a certain percentage of the energy from being transferred into the skull. Given how often concussions are happening, and our current obsession with long term brain damage (with or without concussions), it's safe to say the current foam thickness isn't even close to what will be needed.
So in the future, our road unis may resemble Darth Helmet a lot more than they do storm troopers :)
I'm far from a materials engineer, lol. Guys that have had multiple, or recent, concussion(s) wear those oversized helmets. They say it's awkward at first, but they get used to them, and the support is allegedly much better. I dunno. I just hate all the sissified rules.
Jeremy
I don't know what to think about the upcoming season. It's hard to be too excited with losing so much talent on offense. I'll still watch and root, but I am not going in with high hopes. This way, if they have a sub-par season I won't be disappointed, but if they have a decent season I will be pleasantly surprised.

Man, I got to agree with Mike there.

This is about as reasonable as me saying Geno Smith was the reason WVU's season was terrible. 2012 was the worst Texas defense in the history of the football program. To say this team goes 11-2 if the defense has the season they were supposed to is not a stretch.

(W) @ Kansas, 8/16 (50%), 63 yds, 0 TD, 2 INT; 58.1 rtg
(W) @ Texas Tech, 11/19 (58%), 264 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT; 226.7 rtg
(W) Iowa State, 25/31 (81%), 364 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT; 200.6 rtg .... (Ash injured ribs late)
(L) TCU, 10/21 (74%), 104 yds, 0 TD, 2 INT; 70.2 rtg .... (rib injury killed arm strength)
(L) @ K-State, DNP
(W) Oregon State, 21/33 (64%), 241 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT; 138.9 rtg
Season Stats:
David Ash: 214/318 (64%), 2699 yds, 19 TD, 8 INT, 153.3 rtg (#20 overall)
Braxton Miller: 148/254 (58%), 2039 yds, 15 TD, 6 INT, 140.5 rtg (#44 overall)
Geno Smith: 369/518 (71%), 4205 yds, 42 TD, 6 INT, 163.9 rtg (#5 overall)
OU loss - team effort, Ash looked just as bad as the rest of the team
WVU loss - horrible defense, bad snap from Espinosa on woulda-been game winning drive
TCU loss - Ash's fault because he wasn't honest with the coaches
And I was extremely encouraged by the way we used Ash in the 2nd half of the Alamo Bowl. I think our offense is going to be dirty in 2013.
more random stats to show just how terrible Ash is...
Yds / Attempt; Yds / Completion; rush att; rush yds
Ash: 8.49; 12.61; 51; 141
Miller: 8.03; 13.78; 227; 1271
Smith: 8.12; 11.40; 66; 151
I bet Ash runs a lot more often, more effectively, as a junior, behind a now veteran O-line.
Honestly Adam, those statistical comparisons you posted are nice, but I don't think they prove anything. I'm not saying that he is bad or good, but you are comparing him to a pair of quarterbacks that play completely different styles of offense, especially Miller. Ash to Miller is like comparing apples to oranges LOL.
Considering I don't know any better though, I will take your word for it that Texas offense is in good hands with Ash next year.
I brought Braxton Miller into the convo to put Ash's numbers in perspective for mike. Braxton and Ash aren't as different athletically as the numbers suggest -- Ash just wasn't asked to run last year because Case McCoy is turrible.
It's understandable that people think we still don't have a QB. After all, they saw the TCU game. Unfortunately for then true sophomore Ash, that was the last of 3 bad showings on the year.
But the #20 passer rating, the way the offense greatly exceeded expectations, the improvisation ability he flashed, the no-huddle offense of the Alamo Bowl, the graduation of only a few role players... Ash is poised to really impress next season, surrounded by the most talented Longhorn offense since ~2006. Longhorn internets is as cynical as it gets, but there's virtually zero concern about Ash as a junior. Certainly less than there was about Colt McCoy heading into his (RS) Jr season.
you didn't just say Ash can run as good as Braxton did you?
do I need to refresh your memory?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn7MIZGQi4g
I said they're not as different as the numbers suggest. Ash can run, but our offense was designed to keep him in the pocket. Obviously Urban believes in running the QB, a lot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib-SAX1qdHE
Braxton (6'2", 210) looks more elusive, but Ash (6'3", 223) is tough and certainly fast enough to keep a defense on its heels.

Since OU stole WVU's OL coach, they had to find a replacement, quickly. That replacement is coming in the name of WV native Ron Crook, who coached tight ends and offensive tackles at Stanford the past 2 seasons. Obviously that OL has been fantastic the last few years. Extremely pleased with this hire.
OU got an excellent, excellent, recruiter in Bill Bedenbaugh that they snagged from us. As a coach? Heh, good luck, the (lack of) production of WVU's o-line speaks for itself.
Jeremy
Jeremy, have you heard anyting more on KJ's situation?
Haven't heard anything else, but I'm not worried about it. Off season DUI won't affect him. He only blew .058, but since he's only 19, it's an automatic. Either way, he'll run, A LOT, and puke, A LOT, but will be otherwise fine.
Now, Travis Bell is a different story. Domestic battery is serious shit, and he may be in deep on this.
Jeremy
Long career at lots of places... I hope he does terribly at OU.
http://www.wvusports.com/images/bedenbaugh-bill2.jpg
LOL, that picture kills me, every time.
As a recruiter, he's fan-damn-tastic. Top 50 in the Country, one of the absolute best in the B12.
Definitely wasn't impressed with his OL coaching at WVU. Josh Jenkins and Quinton Spain were both Army All Americans out of high school, and Dana's scheme is very simple. Yet, neither one of these two did shit. Spain couldn't even be coached to stop telling plays with his feet? Meh, you can have Bedenbaugh, OU.
One thing I will give Bill credit for is the way he left. After national signing day, so we didn't lose any recruits. That's classy, and very appreciated. Arguably, the cream of our '13 class is Shelton Gibson, and Bill was his recruiter.
Jeremy

And all of this brings up a pretty fair question, one that we find ourselves asking more and more as the years go on: What in the heck is the Texas football coaching staff doing?
It's not quite as bad as telling potential recruit Johnny Manziel he could play safety for the Longhorns, but not using Goodwin is also head scratching. Goodwin had 39 touches all year for an offense that ranked a pedestrian 40th in yards per game. The Longhorns probably could have used the fastest player in college football more than three times a game.
Goodwin isn't a polished football player. He has never been able to commit fully to the nuances of the game, as an elite track athlete who was a finalist in the long jump at the 2012 Olympics. Yet, we're also willing to bet he's the only one on any football field he has been on that can be hand timed at 4.17 in the 40-yard dash. It's a coaching staff's job to teach the players, and put their best players in positions to succeed.
In those criminally low 39 touches last season, Goodwin scored six times. Go figure that a guy that fast could score at a ridiculous rate. The coaches seemed to figure it out a bit in the bowl game, in which Goodwin scored on a 64-yard run and a 36-yard catch. Would have been nice in the first 12 games to use a player that scored on one of every 6.5 touches as a senior.
More damning on Texas is that reports from the Senior Bowl were very positive. Shutdown Corner's Doug Farrar was impressed with Goodwin. So were others, who saw him and couldn't understand either why Texas didn't use him more, like perhaps a more raw version of Tavon Austin with West Virginia. After all, the 40th-ranked team in total offense couldn't have had much to lose.
