Lemme go look at how my wear is, I had some SERIOUS SERIOUS squealing when I put some new blanks and AX-6 pads on several months ago, it was popping those springs off, I got some ebay slotted rotors and the noise stopped, havent put the springs on yet and 95% of the noise has gone away, never bothered putting them on again.

edit: And I dont know why anyone would leave it off.

It's the pad retaining/spacer spring. It's shaped like a cross on 2g rears. Cant remember the shape on 1st gen.

This is what I thought it was, I would call that a clip not a spring. And I agree, why would you omit that?

SCE bolts don't exist for 1G rears.

The rear is a sliding caliper. How would stiffening bolts apply?

That anti-rattle spring is critical for your sanity. Roll your windows down and roll the car back and forth and you'll some ridiculous clunking. With the cross shaped spring in place there's no clunk. The pads will also migrate if your pistons aren't stuck so you'll get the clunk during nearly every stop without the cross shaped spring. I lost a couple of those springs (brand new, they just didn't want to stay on) so I had to bend them a bit further on the hooked end to keep them on.
