Re-visiting Oils
well, since I'm going through another breakin on the car oil wise I figure I'd look at what's around and what's available at a REASONABLE price...
so I've settled on some fairly widely available oils..
For the Gearbox/TC: Castrol VMX-M...$42 (4L)
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...126527#details
For the Engine: HPR5 $44 (5L)
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/onl...=14911#details
For Kaaz Rear Diff: Penrite Limslip 85w-140 (2.5L) $25
http://www.sparesplanet.com.au/gener...0-2-5-ltr.html
will let you guys know how it all goes.
Stuff I'm also testing is:
EBC Yellowstuff pads (the level above Redstuff, which have been excellent)
RBF600 Brake Fluid (very good without the $10 premium per bottle the RBF660 carries)
For an Oil Flush I use the Penrite Everyday 5w-40
For Filters I just use Ryco's

How long are you going to be running these oils? cus I wouldn't use Penrite in my car for even 5 mins. Penrite HPR series is way over priced for the crap it is. Your better off with a cheap Castrol semi synthetic.
-
what would you recommend specifically for the engine then? I've been using Sin 5 but it's $80...?
-
I spoke to Harold at performancelub.com and he suggested if you can't afford Redline then try the Royal Purple or Amsoil oils. Personally I am using Castrol Edge Racing 10W60 [$75] but I will be using Amsoil or Redline on my next change. Harold also stated the Castrol is only a middle range product but it's better than the others in that catagory. [Also better than the Penrite stuff]

well, I'll let you know how I go on the cheap stuff :)

if i was to break in another engine i would look at the new break in oils availble, and for a oil filter i would use the royal purple filter. i was in summit racing a few days ago and they have a comp cam break in oil and also royal purple break in oil made with more zddp just for break in. they also have zddp to add to the oil. . it may be overkill but probably worth the cost.

not breaking in the engine...just the GB and Diff.

Are you using the HPR5 for a flush or are you planning on running it for the full term. Just it's only a semi synthetic. No matter what brand I wouldn;t using anyhting except fully synthetic.

Mike with the amount of money you have invested into your drivetrain, whatever you do make sure you do it properly dude. Would kill for a drivetrain like yours
Maddy :D

I'm pretty sure even the shittiest oil will be "OK" and yes I'm using it long term, I'm flushing with something worth $20...maybe after I build the other engine I'll start really wasting money on oil. I'll be putting decent oil in the drivetrain though.
