Hmm.. Yeah. I've seen bearings that were worn below the copper layer (it's black below the copper, heh) that basically fell out of the girdle, but that one main looks like it had actually started being deformed by friction and was in the initial stages of spinning. Pretty amazing timing.
I was gleaning that the rod bearings usually go first. I replaced them, while banging out oil pan, and left the mains alone for the 120k (actually did the oil pan twice cause the gasket doesn't work). Relatively stock and not pushing it, knock is under control.
Is it safe to say your mains condition is very specific to your car since you had similar issues 25k ago with all your mods and driving habits?
no, I think it is pretty common for our mains to be worn out when over 100K.
