In Australia that's the law also. You must start on a 250CC or lower for the first year I think..... [maybe 6 months..]

Same law in NZ - I just got a CR 500 and registered it as a 250cc. As if any cop would know!!!
Certainly not a law here. I know of plenty of people that went out and bought liter bikes for their first bike. Kinda dumb, but saves you from buying two bikes, lol.
Started on a 1100 Katana, No problems. Sold it though because I wanted to live.
'murica FTW
Yea theres no law around here about what bike you have to start on, its just I would feel better on a Sv 650 or something... Its small enough for me to start on and big enough for me to ride after I have experience, and if i want to go faster im sure I can mod it if needed... But theres no need for me to go really fast in a straight line, Id rather have a carving machine :)
I'm pissed off because I'm getting 15 counts of knock at 10 psi. I need to make sure I got my wideband calibrated correctly because I think I'm pretty lean too
My favorite Boston Pizza just burned down today :(
