on the ones in my car I simply took the "step" out that's there to hold the fire ring, did the same on my manifolds (the front one requires you weld on the flange on the out side if you do that, because it is welding on the inside). I choose not to use the fire ring because I have seen it on cars that are pushed hard and build allot of EGT melt, deform and make it's way down into the housing and come in contact with the turbine wheel.
