That is what I was thinking too. I've even seen that happen when a hole had oil in it and a bolt was screwed in fast with air tools.

A lot of permatex in the pan too. Not sure what the bolt is.
Enough to clog the pickup?
Is that an additional weight to balance a rod? Doesn't look like something that could possibly be mounted on a 3sx custom rod. Hrmm, trying to figure out where that metal fragment came from. Only thing I can think of is the end of the plunger on the oil bypass valve but even that isn't tapered like that. When you dropped the pan and turned the crank by hand can you tell if one of the rod bolts is missing?
That piece is a part of the block. It's the bottom of one of the oil pump bolt holes. It was pushed out by to long of a bolt being used to mount the oil pump, or an uncleaned bolt hole.
Interesting that it took this long to become a problem.
I believe it's the upper middle bolt hole, or the next upper hole towards the filter housing. The casting behind them looks like a little bump, or bubble. Looks like it was done to prevent the bolts from having an open end into the crankcase.
That piece is probably totally unrelated to his failure.
