So I durdled around with the car a little tonight. I say durdled because I didn't make any progress mechanically but I did some spot checking on my work to cover my bases. I found that the line I made that goes from the coolant pipe to the throttle body is kinked so I need to take care of that. I also found some pitch black oil coming off the turbo as well as the exhaust housing area, and it looks just like the oil I found pouring out of my exhaust ports that brought me to rebuild the head anyway. Checked the plugs and they were clean, so that's good.
If you recall, I originally wanted to go with a stock feed but couldn't because the PO drilled out the head to a bigger size, making the stock banjo way too small. I ended up returning the parts to the dealership. Well, now I don't have that problem since I got a new head! So I'm going to buy the stock pipe and banjos again to rule out excess oil pressure from my homemade stainless steel line and restrictor. If it still leaks oil after that, I'll check the exhaust ports again, and if that checks out, the only other possibility is a blown turbo with 0 miles, in which case I'll simply source out a used 14b to hold me over while I get the rest of the car straightened out. If I find oil in the exhaust ports, then I'll be a little angry, and by a little I mean a lot.
could the black oil be burnt assembly lube? i have seen it turn pretty nasty whenm exposed to heat and not able to mix in with other oils
That's what I was thinking at first too. It's hard to say at this point. The consistency seemed a little thin but it could very well be that. I guess the best thing to do is just let the engine run for an extended period of time before jumping to bold conclusions on my end. That being said, I'd still like to invest in a proper stock oil feed line.
I worked on the car for a bit tonight. Went to put on the accessory belts but the power steering belt I was given is way too big so I'm going to have to figure out what's up with that. That means I can't go forward with putting on the alternator belt since I'd just have to take it back off anyway to get the other belt on (the PS belt is behind the alternator belt and share the water pump pulley).
I also disconnected the exhaust manifold and pulled it back slightly to investigate. Once again, oil is in the manifold and coating the edges of the exhaust ports, but port 1 is completely dry. I couldn't see the valves so I'm not sure if it looks the same as it did before. Is it possible that oil could be slung from the turbo all the way up to the exhaust ports on the head? Port 1 being dry is extremely suspect as, based on how the manifold is built, if something were to get slung up the manifold, port 1 would definitely remain dry.
I say "oil" but its pitch black, almost like a mix of carbon buildup and oil. It's the same as it was before though.
I don't know if it's just me being paranoid. I ought to be confident in my head repair. Seems the best route now would be to just get the factory oil feed and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'll drive it around and see if maybe it just needs to be driven. If it persists, it seems like the turbo ought to be replaced.
i doubt your goign to fling oil up into your manifold due to the exhaust pressure even at idle being way to much . just run it a bit an see what happens. could be anything from lubricant left in the cylinders to an actual oil leak. re check your headbolts after a heat cycle , did you put stud in it?
Interesting project, didn't go through the entire thread but looks like you have a good plan. Just wanted to offer too that i just got in a very clean and highly modded gst that we are parting out so I have a lot of stuff I can give a good price on if your looking.
I've done a little more research on the subject, and it turns out there is an oil passage directly behind the lower middle exhaust manifold stud, and if that stud gets a little loose, oil will leak out into the manifold. I didn't notice this stud being loose when I was threading my bolts in last week but I'm going to double check this. This could have also been the problem with the previous head as the previous owner took all the studs out and used bolts that were likely undersized.
Would be a very good find if that is the case
