I didn't think it was needed when I said I was keeping it due to sentiment lol
I completely forgot:
Hookers and Blow.
yes but not being rude, this is 3si :p
you kinda have some choices...you can make it a VR4...which will make it fantastic and cost most of your budget just making it "right"
or you can modify it past a VR4, and it will be more powerful, better at anything than a normal VR4, but not as fun to drive...(if you know what I mean)
OR you could keep it..as it is...and take a VR4 and make a track car from it? I'd probably go Option 3
You really didn't need to say that much. I know all about sentimental value. I plan on putting some money into my Stealth, but if I had $20k I wouldn't put all of it into it no matter how much I love my car.
As said, fix up the SL. Get it painted if needed, update the interior, throw some new wheels on it, get some coilovers, get some underhood pretty things, etc. Make the car a beauty, but don't build the hell out of it. Even doing the things I noted will cost a good chunk of money.
Dr 750s, injectors, a tune, new seat covers then bank the rest.
if it really mattered that much to me as it appears to matter to you...I'd go a VR4 conversion, during the conversion I'd make it MINT like what AusGT3 is doing on our Aussie 3si forum section.
I'd also be keeping it 100% stock in the conversion, again assuming it is as dear to you as you say, invest in GPS tracking/Security and expect your budget to blow out.
If I was you I would spend around 5k on the SL to fix it up, 2-3k on a 1st gen vr4 with a spun bearing, and spend the rest building up the engine/driveline + EMS +DR 800 and up turbo kit.
Oh maybe I should have specified. The $20k isn't the complete end all budget. That's just this go around, then the car will probably sit for a while longer before it goes under the knife again when the next big chunk of change comes through. I really only take her out a few times a year.
In that case Convert it to AWD :) grab a normal VR4 engine and parts for stage one (maybe find a car that has a massive side impact or write off and take everything to convert it (make sure the car has intact subframes, iirc you need those if you want a perfect conversion.
do the 3.5+ conversion in stage 2.
