1994 has a stronger engine.
The 1992 has 2 bolt main caps. The 1994 has 4 bolt main caps. This of course applies if both cars have their orignal factory motors. That is why the 4 bolt motor is considered stronger.
You can do a search to see what upgrades are needed for your horsepower goal. The more horsepower you want, the more money you have to spend to fuel the motor and hopefully keep it together. Many options exist when you say "beef it up". Good luck!
You may want to check with Ninja (Chris Hill) . He will have great ideas and prices on anything you get from him. You will need to know how healthy your motor is before you ask more out of it. You need to find someone close to you that knows the VR-4 cars to assist you if this is new to you.

As well as the transaxle and x-fer case differences. The 92 is going to have the 5 speed which is pretty well bullet proof. Depending on the build date, it may be a 25 spline vs. the 18 spline of the early models. The transfer case is weak, though. The 6 speed in the 94 is the opposite. The bell-housing needs reinforced(dependent on what you intend to do with the car), but the transfer case is stout. In any event, we would need a lot more info about what kind of goals you have in mind.

Im in southern NH, looking to make my 3000GT VR4 purchase this spring. Looking to learn a little more about the car before I start shopping. I need to understand and learn more about the intricate systems this car has. I have built a 1st Gen Eclipse, Several custom jeeps and currently restoring a 58' Ford. Im no stranger to working on cars. I swear i was born with a wrench in my hand as my father was a master mechanic back in the day. Im Looking forward to being part of the forum!
