Keep in mind the timeline. Was it that big considering at the time?

They have been building navy vessels for like 120 years there.
Its also interesting to note that Picatinny Arsenal is right by my house in northern NJ and they develop/design 90% of our military's weaponry and bombs. And yet...russia wanted to strike south nj? what, they wanted to stop atlantic city from letting people gamble?! Or could russia predict the future and know what would come of the jersey shore and wanted to help us out?
Russia was prepared for a preemptive strike to destroy Jershey Shore... LOLOL
No one has pointed out that NYC wasn't a target either.
after reading this brings back very scary memories of the whole very real situation people of my age and older lived through. most of you who have posted up here may not even have been born when this cold war was going on. i for one was living in a hellish fear of a total pre-emptive strike by both the russians or the Americans even the British.
each super power had hundreds 1000's of ICBM's all teetering on the actions of which IDIOT was going to strike first. and at one point it became very close to an all out nuclear war. i was in my early teens with nightmares that i had every night about the complete destruction of the world and they were very close to becoming a reality.
NOT REALLY something i wish to live through again. and i do not know to this day what started it all off? because last i heard, Britain, America and Russia were close allies and all i could understand from it was that Russia wanted to show superiority over the other two powers. i guess its what happens when you elect power hungry people into office?
Dutch will remember all this and maybe 1 or 2 more but the rest would never understand what kind of fear we actually lived in, what uncertainty our futures held at the time. reagan (possibly the best president USA had) was rubbing shoulders with Thatcher (possibly the worst PM we ever had) were in talks with Russia's new president Mikhail Gorbachev to reduce war heads. but 1982 came the closest to an all out war...
if Andropov would have been more of an idiot he was made out to be there would have been a complete nuclear retaliation there and then. based simply on a test fired missile.Quote:
November 2: Exercise Able Archer 83 — Soviet anti-aircraft misinterpret a test of NATO's nuclear warfare procedures as a fake cover for an actual NATO attack; in response, Soviet nuclear forces are put on high alert.
