JimVR4 95 Spyder Engine Rebuild

Need a little help. I finally got time to take apart the intake and remove the rear plugs. All of them look decent. As I mentioned before I checked the timing and all the cam marks line up when #1 is at TDC so timing seems to be OK. However I feel like there is a lot of resistance in rotating the crank by hand especially when all the plugs are out. Also when I crank the car over the starter doesn't turn the engine very quickly.

So, how much resistance should there be and how fast should the starter be turning the engine?

with plugs out there should be virtually no resistance to turning the engine by hand and the starter should zing it over quickly. Could be bent valves or a object in the cylinder causing some drag.

With the engine turning this slowly is it even possible to do a compression test on any cylinder, or just a waste of time? What would you do next? Pull engine or remove heads?

I would go with object in cylinder... like part of the spark plug that's missing.

I'd pull the motor and get the heads off. You already know it needs to be rebuilt, it is just a question of how much is broken. I'm sure you aren't the type of guy to replace one piston or something like that.

I have to agree with DBest, with everything you've posted it seems like something is in the way.

It's pretty hard to judge over the Internet how much is too much, but I'd have to guess you are correct something is wrong... It takes somewhere around 10-20 ft/lbs of torque to get one turning. If you are exerting substantial force to turn it over, It sounds like it's broke...

It's all conjecture at this point until you take it apart, but if it did in fact detonate, there's a very real possibility you butted the rings and stuck some pistons... The stock ring gap isn't all that forgiving to severe heat.
