LOL... Man, I stared at that registration screen for a while and then that song came on. Stupid 16 year olds...

Having read all of your comments about a video I can't view until I'm on my own computer, I have a pretty good picture of what happened.
Having said that, while I deplore non-involved parents, I am a living testament to the fact that abuse/misuse of the legal system can keep one's parenting efforts totally in check, whether the interest and involvement is there or not.
It is perhaps best that none of us the time or inclination to re-hash my parenting experience.
i agree with the posting on facebook. it's important that if the parents of OTHER kids aren't going to properly reprimand their children, that there IS an example made. nothing reinforces childish BS like a chorus of fellow undisciplined children egging it on.
that said, shooting the laptop is a horrible idea. if there's one thing i would want to teach a kid, it is that violence to person or property is never acceptable. that just teaches kids how to have a marriage where each fight is punctuated by $100 of broken stuff. my choice would be to remove her laptop to an inaccessible area--along with all other PC's in the house. password protect all of them (but physically impossible to access, just in case someone has ideas about using thumb-drive boot).
imho, it's simply a function of removing privlidges one by one until the child either grasps the concept of responsibility & gratitude for what has been provided--or until the situation continues to deteriorate until the child no longer warrants being provided shelter under my roof--and in which case, i immediately emancipate them, per their de-facto wishes.
Okay, I've watched it.
You may or may not agree with the presentation, the gun, or have quibbles about production value, but-
(AND YOU WILL NEVER KNOW HOW IT BOTHERS ME TO BORROW THIS DEVICE FROM YOU-KNOW-WHO)
Sorry... try as you might, you can't resist that his logic and reasonings are correct and irrefutable.
Again - Sorry.
Oh, and personally?
A big high five to him and all his fans. :)
Alan, you gotta figure out a way for me to thank myself for posting.
I just paid my dues, and they don't come cheap.
Logic abounds! :)
I had all the typical interactions with my folks.
With my Dad, there were lines you didn't cross, and he figured, at the margins, anyway, that it was up to me to figure out where they were without getting, oh, let's call it feedback - some sort of feedback...
Anyway, that was the concept. :)
I remember - with astounding clarity - the first and only time I defied him to his face, and I describe the incident this way, because it implies that you're within arm's -reach of the...feedback...
Anyway-
I'm walking away from him, and he's already said to me, sotto voce, "You'd better not walk away from me".
Me?
By God, I wasn't gonna have anymore of that, no-sirree, so I walked.
And walked.
And walked some more.
I was amazed.
I had done it!
I walked some more.
I walked far enough that where I got to was, I couldn't not look to see how much distance I'd put on him, so I turned around, and he was standing right where I'd left him, a good 100 yards back.
He was standing, with his head down, and I was crushed - I had disappointed my Dad.
I turned back again, wondered how far I was willing to walk, then I turned around again to see my Dad lift his head, take about five good strides, grab me, and beat my ass in front of God and all the neighbors.
I love my Dad. :)
Fortunately for the world, we will never have little imperfects running around :)
It's your job as a parent to raise you kids. You have the responsibility of teaching your children the concept of responsibility and gratitude. Neither of which would be accomplished by emancipating them which is both shunning your responsibility to raise them and being generally ungrateful for being to have children in the first place.
you completely missed the part where that's the absolute last resort for a child who simply will not be cowed via every other available method of parenting. those kids do exist. child or no, if that individual chooses to experience life the hard way, then i will not stand in their way. the door is there.
You missed the point where that if the child YOU raised makes that choice... You failed to raise them incorrectly. You did something wrong.
You started with a clean slate and you messed it up. You don't just get to put it in the back of a closet and never look at it again.
Im not sure why you all are arguing about peoples lives you know nothing about :). My opinions on the video:
Seems like he is being a child. Like all southern raised dads that I personally know. Seriously though, what kids havent said shit like that about their parents or thought they were always right and have to do oh so much work. Its part of growing up and being a teenager. (At least for most of my generation)
I honestly dont think these actions will solve anything. Plus he is just going to look like an asshole to all her facebook friends.
He just shot a laptop that he paid for? What a dumbass... haha.
Also, note he said stepmother. That means there was a divorce. None of us know at what age it happened and what it has done to her emotionally. Plus the affect of having a stepparent..
Facebook is evil. Ive been boycotting for months :) I honestly dont know how long its been, at least 5 or 6? But once you are free, damn does it feel good.
edit: What the hell is the point of using hollow points on a laptop?
do you even have kids? have you ever lived in a ghetto? do you have the foggiest idea about what trying to raise a kid in the inner city is like?
i pity your children who are going to be raised believing in 1000% internal locus of control. the world is going to rape them without lube.
No, and neither do you. Whats your point?
No, I haven't lived in a ghetto. Nor would I. I *WILL* raise my kids in an environment that I feel is good and safe for them. Maybe your not reading my posts? The whole post you quoted was about raising my kids in a good environment. What does living in the inner city have to do with anything.
I'm assuming the world has already raped you without lube with such a cynical view of it.
My sister had all the same opportunities I did and made bad decision after bad decision. Even today I don't understand a lot of the choices she makes. I think IPD had a point, but we're talking about pretty extreme children, here... Nothing remotely close to the girl being discussed in the video.
I have several siblings ranging from completely rebelious in every way eventually killing themselves via drug overdose to participated in every club in highschool, graduating top 10% and getting a masters degree.
There are all kinds of factors that effect how a kid will turn out. I still don't think parents should give up on their kids. Regardless of the circumstances.
Just my opinion. My .02 cents.
You didn't read all of the thread. Specifically the stuff I quoted from his facebook page. Didn't even remotely turn out they way you think it did. The guy is exactly what I thought he was, a Southern gentleman with an intense desire to see his child have all the resources to develop into a well rounded adult. His relationship with his daughter appears to be very close, as well.
The divorce had nothing to do with anything. On his FB page he posted that he discussed the daughters actions with the ex-wife, first. She did, indeed, tell him to put a bullet through the laptop for her, after hearing the full story.
There's an enormous dichotomy between running your mouth to one of your friends about your parent(s), versus broadcasting it to the world via social media.

Ahahaha...well at least we're getting into academia now. You're right that environment plays a huge role. Why don't we throw in some psychology, and point out that positive+negative reinforcement > positive reinforcement > negative reinforcement, that maintaining consistency is key, that if you ignore your kids other than to punish them, then bad behaviour becomes attention-seeking behaviour. Also throw out there that negative reinforcement tends to suppress creativity.
I'm sure you know more than I do, after all, you have a bachelor's in social psychology and social work, right? I've only taken intro psych, B&B and human neuropsychology classes...with Dr. Michael Persinger, but still.
Suddenly, it all makes sense.

I think the most important thing that you pointed out was the part about (At least for most of my generation). Because your generation has no respect for your elders. The reason being, your elders were raised with discipline. When I grew up yea, I might have thought some of the things that she did. But, you can bet your ass I kept my mouth shut or there would be consequences. Kids these days think they can do anything and nothing will happen to them. That's why we have kids killing kids at the age of 9. IFthese kids had been given some kind of direction or discipline they MAY have turned into something besides killers.
I think that when we took spanking out of the schools, prayer out of the schools and let all the kids "WIN" just for participating it gave kids no reason to try to become something better.
I did miss parts of the thread, I was in a bit of a hurry.
I wasnt talking about what the mother or father thought together or separately. I was talking about the emotional toll on the child. Also, facebook and social media is the easiest place to bitch for kids. Why? Because then everyone can comment and agree with and feel bad for her.
She shouldnt be bitching on facebook, or at least to not that extent. But it just seems like a very childish way to handle the situation by the father.
You are definitely right about no respect, I see it everyday. I dont understand it either, I respect everyone, unless there is a reason they do not deserve it or they can not respect me. And if she doesnt have respect for her father, I think there is something wrong there. Something that wasnt done quite right for the last 15 years.
Kids these days do have it easy to, hell I had it easy. Why do you think I got out of the house right away, I wanted to learn to fend for myself, to live my own life and take complete care of myself.
Prayer does not belong in schools but that is a different discussion that I do not want to bring up haha. Neither should anyone except the parents be hitting the kid.
I completely agree with giving them no reason to be better though.
For those of you that had a strict childhood, how many of you have seen the movie Tree of Life?
Just curious.
Nice! Although the Koren helmet was work between him, Dr. Valliant and their technologist Mr. Koren (hence the Koren helmet), from about 20 years ago. The newer one looks a lot different. I was a guinea pig for one of his students once, don't know if I was the control or not, but it was an interesting experience. I spent about an hour thinking music (not thinking of music, but thinking music).
Its too bad so much of his work is on the fringe of the 'paranormal', as he's a very good teacher that expects a lot from his students. You should see his exams. :P
Not yet. Mind you, if you want to play that card, then I would point out that although I have a heart, it doesn't make me nearly as knowledgeable as a cardiologist. In the end, I'm sure you'll find parents on both sides of the fence on this one, so you need to be able to make a case, otherwise its just opinion.
AFAIK, J does not have children, but that does not detract from his ability to participate in this conversation, IMO. Every perspective brings value here. I've heard a lot of people discuss how poor parenting is the underlying problem in this country today... All those shitty parents have a lot more experience than I do. We should be willing to consider all perspectives; Not simply dismiss them due to "lack of (potentially terrible) experience".
WHen I'm looking for advice on doing something on my car, I turn to those with more experience than I, not less. How is parenting different?
Those of you who have not been in the position of raising a rebellious (in my case, they went WAY the hell beyond rebellious) child are of course entitled to your opinions, but I assure you, in your wildest imaginings, you can't grasp what raising my little nightmares involved. Maybe that's because I didn't have the foresight to take video... I was otherwise occupied.
God willing, none of you will have to deal with how you'd react when one of them trades YOUR laptop or jewlrey for a couple joints, or a line of coke. Or catching him or her in the basement, crushing the neighbor's cat's paw in your workbench vise for the fun of it. Or burning down your garage while playing with a propane torch. Or at 13, stealing your wife's car and wrapping it around a tree. I could go on here for hours...
Or my proudest day, when Ryan, at 16, calmly announced that he'd just cut the rest of our throats while we sleep, then burn the house down... I believed him, and with good reason. Yes, I GAVE UP on him. I abondoned my responsibility and had social services remove him from my home within the hour. WHich of you is qualified to second guess me on that one?
I learned a lot of lessons in taking in the 8 and 10 year old children of my ex's junkie sister, but to this day, I still haven't figured out how I could have better handled them. Some of you would say I failed as a parent, and maybe you'd be right. But then, maybe you know jack shit about it, and never will. I personally would guess the latter is more likely.
Bashing of this guy's parenting skills means little from someone who hasn't been there. The guy in this video will hear no criticism from me.
I'll quote, cuz Alan's contraption won't let me thank you for that.
My oldest step-son's departure from the nest coincided with the disappearance of the cream of my collected collectables - the top (easily portable) 5% of my stuff, worth about 30K.
Bought his way out to Denver to be near a buddy and set himself up.
He's in prison now - 35, and he'll be getting out in about 30 years...if he doesn't fuck that up, too.
only a bleeding heart liberal would believe that every kind can "be saved". just because you're the worlds greatest parent doesn't mean your kid won't be a fuck-up. and just because you baby the shit out of your car & treat it like gold, doesn't mean that it won't be totaled by an illegal driver.
i haven't the foggiest why some people feel that all variables are within personal control.
I don't think you failed as a parent at all. You weren't the parent. Their parents already shirked their responsibility and as such, their children developed how they did. It sounds to me like you had a pretty impressive amount of control to last as long as you did.
True, but inaccurate.
Step-parents or people in Glenn's situation have all of the accoutrements of parenting with about 10% of the authority, and even that is only a fact of age.
When I was growing up, rare was the time my family didn't host or otherwise sponsor anywhere from 2-8 of my cousins, due to death or divorce.
My parents became everyone's parents, legally and/or otherwise.
Ryan was a snake, with no respect for life, human or otherwise. He came by it honest, I never blamed him for what he'd become. I only held him accountable for the choices he made going forward.
He is currently serving time in Montana for what happened at the tail end of a 7 state string of armed robberies. I suspect he will never get out. When Montana is finished with him, he still faces charges in other states. ANd each time he seems to be nearing his term, he finds a way to extend it. The last was assaulting a guard.
I will regret to my grave not being able to get through to him. Or his sister.
But it wasn't for lack of trying.
First of all you never stop parenting your childern no matter how old they are.
The boundaries change but you should always be there for guidence.
I can understand the Dads anger but I don't beleive I would post it all over the internet.
The face book account would have been deleted and the laptop would have been taken away for a period of time.
