CoopKill's Mistress Makeover Thread [Pic Heavy]

So today I got everything fitted up, and disassembled for the trip to the coater tomorrow.

Hopefully the last fitment issue. The waste gate actuator on the rear is impeded by the O2 flange on the header. A simple grind solved it.

The drain tube on the rear turbo was a bitch to get bent into a position where it would be not touching the dam header. After some swearing, and a tool launch I got it routed, and ready for coating. Will be coating both returns as well.

While parts are getting coated I will put together the cams/heads, and get the oil pump/other craps assembled. I need to get the bell housing, and fuel pump hat/bracket in to the welder as well. One day closer...

Great Build Bill, very cool! You have one of my favorite cars.

Parts have been delivered to the coater. Not as bad of a bill as I thought to coat the DP, both oil returns, the 3 pieces of of Mani's, both turbin housings, the lower intake mani, and an Evo turbin housing for $425.

OK, update time!

The coater was a bit optimistic in his done on Monday statement. Go figure... Saying Wednesday now, we shall see.

Yesterday I did son trimming on the Cianci 3 pod a-pillar, took one of the busted mounting tabs out of the mount location, and epoxied it on the new pod.

the brackets do look very nice!

when you get that brace welded in, make sure they weld it in like ray does with the 3 welds on the big end, and 2 welds on the small end. i remember when i went to pick up my trans, he told me about how some people mess it up and it does more harm than good. he also usually welds to the housing on the small end, here is a pic

Nice progress! Curious about the brace - I found a guide somewhere for installing a brace and it was a huge piece that almost filled the whole area up. I would post it here but it's 2MB.

there are two styles of brace.

i have the one bill has. ray says that the other brace causes oil flow issues, and its no stronger than this one. obviously i dont know, but i generally trust what ray says

I had to replace the plastic oil diverter thing because it melted. That race was a bitch to get out afterwards also. Mine was welded all the way around instead of three small welds though so I'd say that's a better way to do it. Also I remember somebody having a hard time getting the race all the way back in on a trans that was welded all the way around.

right, i was saying that because it will warp the metal if you have it welded as you say. you CAN weld it all the way around, but you have to do three like i showed, then weld in between them. but even still sometimes, if you make a section of the case TOO rigid, it can do more bad than good. the trans cases are not very strong metal in general, and they have some flex to them. if you take out that flex in just one section to too much of an extreme, it can actually cause premature failure. i havent seen that posted anywhere, but from the classes i have taken in school, that is something that makes sense to me.

You would think the brace blocking off the oil divertor (on the left) would be detrimental to the intermediate bearing-

Got the bell housing prepped, and the brace fitted. Unfortunately I missed the gentleman that was to weld it up today.

On to the fuel system prep. Removed the hanger, and tore it down. I lost the instructions? from GZP. So all I had to go off of was a pic saved from their website. After looking at it, and what little space for the return line, I did a little modding to get it all in there. Not sure if this is how he designed it, but it will work.

After cutting the feed tube from the top I drew up where the AN fittings would need to go.

Unfortunately my drill bit index fails me. I need to get a quality index with a much more broad selection. I was going to have the guy that was to weld it up drill it, but as I said earlier I missed him. Two more thing on the shopping list, drill bit index, and a good tap n die set that does not suck.

Oh I also ordered a timing belt tensioning tool from SnapOn. $33, and well worth it vs. the crap/bending pain in the ass 3sx one I have. I do enough TB's with the local 3s'rs that I needed something better. Will post up a pic for those that do not know what I am talking about.

I have also 90% convinced myself to go ahead and do the 1st/2nd synchros while the trans is apart. Where is the cheapest source for them???? Might just check Ninja, he needs more love...

Yeah that's not the 3sx one I was speaking of, but that is very much like the snapon one.

You just reminded me that I need to modify my fuel pump housing and throw an AN fitting on it.

Lol, my first fuel pump swap I broke that hose in half without knowing.

But no, I have a fuel kit that runs to the tank. I was going to get the jackhammer hanger but never got around to it and now it's no more..

Coater failed me again. At least this time they are coated, and were in the oven. Tomorrow I will have! Woot!

So... Yeah, about the welding needing done. I know 4 people that weld aluminum. My First go to was a no go due to burning his shop to the ground! :sad: The next 2 are going to the dunes to play. :dontknow2: The 4th, yes the 4th is a machine shop specializing in heads. Well this guy can suck it! Says $150 for 5 one inch welds... On my way home I remembered there is a aluminum boat fab shop not far. One man show, cool as hell, and is getting my shit done tomorrow! woot... I had to remove the bearing, and the plastic oil diverter. $65 for the brace, and the 2 an fitting on the fuel hanger.

Quick question, does the race where the plastic oil thing sear all the way flush? There are 2 spacers/washer pieces I assume go on each side of the plastic? I will look at the manual, but if someone can confirm...

I got the holes cut for the an fittings ready for welding.

Spent the rest of the shop time re-cleaning the bell housing for tomorrow.

i cant tell due to it being out of the tank, but make sure you strategically aim those an fittings so that you dont end up screwing yourself out of an easy connection

Got the rear diff swapped out. The sways are going in in the am, and then onto engine assembly. Things are coming along well now. Shhhhhhh, don't jinx it!

The exhaust pieces look yummy!

Yes, I do like the company that does all my coatings. Though they can get behind due to volume, there is a reason that is. Myhopes are I will not need to fab heat shields, but will see.

those coated parts look great. and those manifolds sure look slick!
