I don't think most people know the Jason Becker story. It's his song that loomis is covering.
Jason Becker put out a solo album around 1990 when he was 19 called perpetual burn. A year later he was Steve vai's replacement with Dave Roth. Before touring for the album he noticed his leg felt funny. He developed als.
You would not believe the impact that one album had on the guitar community. Every kid that picks up a guitar and really gets into being a shredder, finds their way to perpetual burn. It's a rite of passage to be able to play the songs on that album. To this day teenage guitar prodigy's are inspired by an obscure album released on an indie guitar label 25+ years ago that no one outside of the community has heard of.
I first head perpetual burn when I was 19. It was like a lightbulb went off. It was exactly what I had been trying to do. My ego took a hit that someone else had already done what I was trying to do. But it was very comforting to know it was possible. All of the super shred metal guitar can trace itself back to perpetual burn.
Oh, his first band cacophony was with future megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman.
