Of course Rodgers is going to say something like that, because his team lost. If he were the benefactor he would be tight lipped.

The owners want dedicated refs, who aren't beholden to other professions.
Tactically, however, they're in a box.
A rudimentary breakdown:
1. Money. Duh. Average salary of an NFL ref is $149,000. They were offered a raise, but want more. In other sports, refs are paid as much as 300k-400k. So, they have a bit of a point. Dedicated refs would be good. Get rid of the Ed Hochuli's and Scott Greens of the biz. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have a lawyer and a D.C. lobbyist as referees? LOL.
2. Pension. The owners want do away with this and move them to a conventional 401k. Obviously, the refs want the cushy pension plan.
3. Owners want performance based assignment. Of course, this goes against common union mentality.
In the end, it's 100% about money. Don't kid yourself and think the owners have the game's best interest at heart. Always follow the money...
Steve Young said it best:
THAT is the truth.Quote:
the NFL is “inelastic for demand.”
“There is nothing they can do to hurt the demand of the game,” Young said. “So the bottom line is they don’t care. Player safety doesn’t matter in this case. Bring Division III officials? Doesn’t matter. Because in the end you’re still going to watch the game.”
