Yeah, I figure it shouldn't be too hard. The keyboard only half works too so I might look into replacing it as well.
Buy a new laptop. If it's already a hand-me down, has a broken screen, and a malfunctioning keyboard...junk it. You can probably find a used, working laptop for the cost of what you're looking at.
As much as I hate to agree with the purple prick, he might be right on this.
Its only something I am trying to use to get by, then the intention is to give it back to my brother to let my niece and nephew use it.
My girlfriend's old Dell laptop crapped out a few months ago... Had a problem on the motherboard that wouldn't let it charge. I found a used board on ebay for $25. I was going to scrap it until I realized how cheap I could put it back together....

It really depends on the laptop. It's just that the cost on them has gone down so much--and because of parts scarcity on some older models--it may make more sense to just scrap it. I'm not saying NOT look into it...but be prepared for the nuclear option.
