A Bald Eagle as THE symbol of America beats the ever-loving out of a dove or a seagull, doesn't it?
I am not aware of any domestic predatory avian that is not coincidentally a scavenger.
We had to choose a bird, so we chose a Baldy - WTF else should we have chosen?

Owl is the mascot for the school I went to. D2 softball, baseball and basketball National Champs more recently than any other college or pro team in this state. :dontknow:
