Sorry to resurrect this, but I just noticed it in another thread, and want to address this in the college football thread, since WVU is so vehement in their claims that they are a "Southern" school. Where does this sentiment even come from?
IMHO, there is nothing Southern about the state of West Virginia or WVU, aside from the recently acquired Southern culture. I find it absolutely laughable when West Virginians put confederate flags on their trucks since the only reason the state exists is because it refused to join the Confederacy with the rest of Virginia. In fact, their first act as a newly formed state was to join the Yankees in fighting their own Virginian brothers. Now, 150 years later, they suddenly want to claim confederate solidarity and heritage? LMFAO.
The aren't geographically Southern either, the majority of their population lives near Ohio or Pennsylvania. Morgantown itself is further north than Washington DC, Baltimore, Atlantic City and Cincinnati, further north than the majority of the states of Maryland and Delaware, further north than Denver even, and is only a few miles south of Indianapolis and Columbus.
Finally, they didn't start voting with the South until 2000. They voted Democrat when the South was solidly Republican, and voted Republican when the South was solidly Democrat. In 1980 they were one of only five states to vote for Carter instead of Reagan; even California voted for Reagan that year!
While some may claim that the small coal-mining towns of West Virginia share a lot of the same characteristics that define the less developed regions in the South (poor, mostly white, low education, baptist, socially conservative, etc.), I'd be willing to guess the coal-minders in WV have more in common with their counterparts in the coal-mining towns of Pennsylvania and southern Illinois, than they do with folks living in the low country and tidewater areas of the South.
I'm not trying to insult your heritage HilbillyHomeboy, it just always struck me as odd that WV claims to be Southern. I had to say something when I saw this in another thread, but since the thread was about Australia, it didn't make sense to post it there.
LOL. Strike a nerve? I'm asking a legitimate question: in what way can you guys claim "southern pride"? With the exception of the bit about confederate flags, I tried to be as objective as possible. I guess I could have softened it a bit more, but I expected you'd take it in stride, considering the fact that you brought up the notion of "fake southerners".
Nah, I don't waste much time on trolls. ;)
Jeremy
LOL. Considering that you just came from trolling the thread about the VT cop shooting, I find your statement rather hilarious.
If I had wanted to troll you, I could have been quite a bit more insulting. That was not my intention.
I put forth a legitimate question and fair criticism: West Virginia was born from a refusal to join the confederacy, how can her citizens now claim "confederate pride"? Morgantown is geographically further north than many traditional "Northern" cities and demographically West Virginia is more similar to southeastern Pennsylvania than to Texas, Florida or South Carolina; how can you possibly claim to be "Southern"?
IMHO, you guys should consider yourselves a blue-collar hard-working northern university that serves the kids of coal miners and factory workers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it is a very noble pursuit. It is not inferior in any way to being a traditional "Southern" university. I cannot understand why WVU fans have self-identified so strongly with the Deep South when their so much more similar to their Virginian, Ohioan and Pennsylvanian neighbors.
(No, I don't consider VT a southern university either, nor is UVA or Maryland).
cmon people from WV say "y'all"... rarely make it past 8th grade, sleep with their cousins just like the rest of your southerners...
Oh yeah and love to slap rebel flags and bull horns on their pickups... so cmon can't YOU people get along :)
Your post history speaks for itself, Alex. Do I need to pull up all the negative references you make all over the forum concerning, the State of WV, WV football, etc.? You used to be a real cool guy. I dunno what your problem is, nor do I really care that much, to be honest. Your questions are generally thinly veiled jabs. I have NOTHING to explain, or justify, to you. Your hivemind opinions are of 0 consequence, or interest, to me.
After taking the time to read Telionis' carefully constructed post, this response made me burst into laughter.
I didn't know WV considered itself southern and thought Teli made some interesting points. I don't care either way... It makes me laugh how hard some people strive to be associated with the south and how hard others strive to bash it.
LOL @ mike insulting the intelligence of ANY living being.
